The White House...
Discussion
I am in the Washington DC area this weekend, so took a drive into town to see the White House and was surprised how scruffy and small it looks. When you see it on TV, it always appears to be this massive imposing mansion, but in reality, it isn't.
That's all, apart from I saw I mint condition Ferrari 250 GTO (I think) parked up on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Depends on where you saw it from, we saw it from the front when we were there and like you thought it was really small but the 2 wings on either side cant be seen from the normal viewing point
Correct. I was standing on Pennsylvania Avenue, where it is all pedestianised. When I walked along the road parallel (at the bottom of the hill) to see the other side of the building, you could see a little more of the wings on each side.Still, not a patch on Buck House

It could really do with a lick of paint!!!
As sad as it is, that was the first thing I thought when I visited it this morning. I expect Barack's got it on the to do list somewhere between bailing the economy out & trying to undo W's foreign policy disasters.
On a different note, it took 2 bloody hours to clear immigration last night at Dullas airport. A tip to our American cousins. If you want to make people feel as welcome when they arrive to the Capital City of US as you say you do in your interminable immigration videos, don't make a whole 747 load of people stand in line while 2, yes 2, immigration officers deal with passports

Technically, should it still be called the White House now?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77rajWcysw0The white house is only white because of a fire years ago and they use paint to cover the damage.
Also, The liberty bell in Phili is a bell that the English gave them. They used it once and it cracked but being the positive thinkers they decided to put it in a room and call it liberty!
Finally, the landing on plymouth rock is amusing. The history as told in lessons to both sides of the Atlantic is that the opressed pilgrims left to discover a new world. The reality is that they had a visa to land a New York as it had been established for years. They got lost and headed for land and hit just south of Bostone. I went on the May Flower tour where I was told that they were expert navigators by someone in period dress. I asked if they were expert navigators why did they get lost and give up on New York and settle here? Did not go down well.
Also, little know fact.....
Why are american pints smaller than english? Because the english when trading took 20% off the top of a barrel and this has passed down to pints of beer and gallons of petrol.
Anyway, if you get chance to do the bus tour in Phili look for the black guy who looks homeless. He gives the black version of the tour that is fantastic!

If you think the White House doesnt live up to its on screen persona, heres a tip that will save you hours.
Dont, under any account visit Mount Rushmore.
I saw that on the Ewan McGreogor thing - long way round and it looked like more of a small hummock as opposed to 200ft high carvings. Very disappointing.Dont, under any account visit Mount Rushmore.
