I've tried using the search function, but:

I don't understand the theory behind the rejection of condom use by the Pope - surely the suppression of disease should be encouraged?

Man with funny hat said:
Pope Benedict XVI, who is making his first papal visit to Africa, has said that handing out condoms is not the answer in the fight against HIV/Aids.

I suspect biblical scripture is the reason why. Go forth and multiply and all that (with the previso that you only have sex after marriage and with your spouse) .

The theory is that by saying you should use condoms you're saying it ok to have sex. And the Catholic church doesn't like that. So, they reason that by saying "don't use condoms" that people wont have sex. I suppose they believe that having sex is much worse than having AIDS.

I think he was trying to say that condoms are all well and good, but the obvious way to stop
the spread of the AIDS is to stop having sex.

Of course, in theory he is right. In practise, however, rofl good luck Popey!

Good to see the Catholic not-of-this-world bubble is still alive and kicking!

Although I haven't read the article, this has not stopped me from commenting in the past.

I am assuming that the Pope would be suggesting that complete sexual abstinance before marriage is his answer for the Aids crisis.

On that strict criteria, he is, of course, absolutely correct.

Though, it wouldn'tbe much fun would it?

Catholicism and the pope, largely to claim for the aids epidemic and Africa.
Millions infected, millions more unwanted / unsupportable pregnancies.

The tt in the hat hath spake.

I think their stance is mainly if you only ever have a shag with the one person you marry after your married, and stay with them till you die...

then you dont need a condom to prevent the spread of aids...

they believe that condoms encourage you to have this sinful ( their words not mine) sex... with lots of people outside marriage

mind you I expect they use one when they are having young choir boys!!! ( allegedly) but then thats them and not their subjects...

Fairly simple if flawed outlook...

But reading further:

The News said:
Uganda used a policy combining abstinence, fidelity and - only if necessary - the use of condoms, to achieve a significant reduction in the spread of HIV.
Even so, when in marriage you might not want to bang out children like it's out of fashion - by not using Condoms, how many children could be created over a 40 year marriage. What's the catholic (papal) stance on having so many children and not being able to care for them properly?

Is all contraception wrong?

Contraception is wrong, sex is wrong, everything is wrong if you're a Catholic......the Pope is the Patron Saint of guilt don't ya know!

You are indeed right - I'm a catholic myself.

Non practicing of course

However, please explain to me why, if there is a God, why so many bad things are allowed to happen to good people (and the world) - I understand the point of freedom of choice, I really do, but if that's the case, then Man should be allowed to get on with his own self destruction without the "God is everywhere doing good" nonsense that's spouted at you by those religous, do gooder types

Catholicism is the fastest growing religion in Africa.
Shagging is the root of the epidemic, yes absolutely, but it's a natural process and won't stop.
The condom is simple and affective against aids and pregnancy, which is what Africa desperately needs, the geezer in the froc and funny hat has effectively caused the death thousands, possibly millions by preaching this rubbish.

Uganda lies. Simply.

Rumour in Africa, set by the Catholic priests is that condoms have holes that are big enough to let the AIDS virus through, even if preventing pregnancy. The extent of my vitriol for holy men here knows no bounds. I've just had a poor guy defend his pastor for having a private fvcking jet to spread the word..... you couldn't make it up!
