Well, there's a fair chance that a number of people will passionately and strongly disagree with me on this one, and I'll get a flaming or two, but I really don't think that everyone should be allowed to vote in this 'democracy' of ours.

For example, if you don't contribute - why should you have a say in how the country is run or who by? I find it quite offensive that lazy, useless, non-workers (eg - see the 'too fat to work' thread) have exactly the same say in the running (or 'ruining' perhaps?) of this country as a hard-working citizen who has made a worthwhile contribution to the country/society/community/business/defence. I've been dwelling on it a fair bit recently, and it just doesn't seem right at all.

Those in prison fit in here as well - currently they can't vote (I think), and this makes good sense to me - but moves are afoot to let them vote, because it contravenes their 'human rights' (rolleyes oh, ffs).

Anyway. Standing by......

everyone should be allowed to vote, its just that hard working people should earn extra votes. Prove your worth to society in some way and your vote will double or treble, say x4 for a degree (proper ones from a proper uni), x2 for a diploma type thing from a college, then youd get extra votes for each year youre in gainful employment too.

I think you need to pay tax or have paid for x many years( to include retirees), to be able to vote. No vote for the prisoners also.

Do people think women should be allowed to vote . . seriously?

[wondering out loud]

Isn't it odd that such banter would raise no more than a rolleyes from any faction, yet replace 'women' with 'people of colour' or 'homosexuals' or any other grouping you'd care to mention and you'd be ostracised.

We live under such a strange regime.

Do you really think most of these people do actually bother to vote? Not when election turnouts hovering arounf 30% they dont....

so no real issue then

I have to say in theory I disagree, everyone should have a voice no matter how much of a parasite they are on the rest of the country. However in practice I do agree, the system at the moment is so unrewarding to success and the most opportunities are given to those who don't want to change their situation.

Something does need to change but restricting votes to certain people could be the thin end of the wedge.

If you are going to say that the unemployed shouldn't vote, what happens to the people that are out of work through no fault of their own, like those made redundant? Will they be allowed to vote seeing as they have previously contributed?

I think you should answer two simple questions

One about an aeroplane and a conveyor belt

the other about the moon.

If you get them both right you get to vote and procreate

If you get one right, you get sterilized

If you get both wrong, you're submitted for medical research.

Problem is who decides who is worthy to vote? Seems like the first step on the road to dictatorship to me

In my world order they still get to vote but their voting level stays staionary whilst on benefits, 1 years work 1.1 vote, 2 years 1.2 votes and so on and so forth,

I don't view it as being the same as women aren't a minority group and it was obviously a joke.

You're quite right though. It was a poor joke and I'm sorry.

To all the cute PH chicky babes. . .I'm really sorry.

I wasn't having a dig at all. Certainly not seeking an apology.
Just saying that 'women' are a group who can't help but be what they are, just like the others I mentioned. Yet we are 'allowed' to mock them (and them us), but not other groups.

Just seems odd.

Personally, I'd be happier if we could mock everyone mercilessly biggrin

On one thread you have people moaning the curbs on liberties and on another you have people asking for the right to vote to be removed.

How about we do it ala starship troopers, you serve you vote, feck all the lazy arse people who only pay taxes.
