I think the latter, because it is a day for people to think of their mothers...

Not sure though - thoughts?

Will Joseph Fritzl get double the cards on Father's/Fathers' day?

Nearly put a disclaimer about that! If you had to use one of the two above...?

Most of the press/advertising have the former though...

Neither, the whole thing is fking pointless.

"It's ok Mum, we've treated you like a slave for 364 days, but it's Mother'''s Day now so here's a KFC megabucket. Dig in."

yes

It's the 'day of mothers'; plural possessive - Mothers' Day.

Only on PH!

For the record I'm with Mother's given you only really acknowledge your own Mother, unlike Christmas where every dick & their dog get's a card!

It's not your Mother's day though.

Ah, but it's plural possessive so it's Mothers', surely?

yes except in the world of capitalist pig greetings card makers. Then it's Mother's Day IMHO. One has one mother only, and she's the one the day is for.

Why the hell do people buy their grandmother a card on Mothers' Day?

I can't believe that 53% of PHers are unable to correctly apply an apostrophe.

And there was me thinking that this forum was the last bastion of proper English usage.

Mothers' Day surely.

If you say Mother's Day then you sound like a toff.

"Oh I'm going to Mother for the weekend, Mother and I will have a great time."

ETA: "Don't call me surely"

Surely you're missing the point of the question? It is predicated upon the thought that either it is the Day of your Mother (Mother's Day), or the Day of Mothers (Mothers' Day) We're debating the choice of one of two correct grammatical usages.

That may be your question, but it wasn't the OP's.
He simply wanted to know the correct usage.

The day is a general celebration of motherhood. Nothing to do with your mother in particular; it would just be a bit odd if you bought your neighbour's mother a card.
