Ok, lets say your about to move into your first proper 'own pad' after getting your first 'proper job' after uni. Either places are easily commutable to said job.

LEEDS - (North Leeds really)
Born here
Closer to North Yorkshire (good roads and mountainbiking)
Lots of friends and all my family here
Lots of chavs
Still has ideas above its station in terms of some property prices
City centre is disgustingly filthy
Great music scene
Good local PH meets :Driving:

SHEFFIELD - (North/East)

Peak district (Mountainbiking)
Bit cheaper rent
More parks and trees
Cleaner
Council are slightly less of a bunch of tossers than LCC
Went to uni here so perhaps slightly rose tinted view of the place
Great clubs/culture/music etc
No actual current friends in Sheffield

This is all theoretical, as I've not actually got said job, but anyway...

Its something I've been thinking about for a while. I want the high life for a bit - will have more money than ever before in my life (see - first 'proper job'), have a very deep need to be near the countryside outdoors, want a good social/pub/music scene, etc etc.

Any thoughts?

Manchester instead.

It's close enough to both Leeds and Sheffield for all the things you mentioned.

It's also close to Peak District and/or Cheshire for countryside stuff.
The city centre and the music scene are way better than Leeds.

Speaking as someone in his first place and first engineering job living in Leeds.
Moved here for the job in 2006, from Huddersfield university.
Leeds is a great place, especially around Headingly, plenty to do.
Yes rents are a bit higher than elsewhere, BUT they are coming down as lots of folks are struggling to rent out all those 'buy to lets'.

BUT and it is a very BIG BUT...

I moved here for the JOB...not the city.

And if we're offering alternatives...try Huddersfield ..bang in the center of Leeds-Manchester and prices are cheaper

Some years ago we were holidaying in Greece. In the apartment next door were a a very Yorkshire couple from Rotherham.

"Have you ever been to Greece before ?" asked Mrs Yorkie
"Yes" I replied. " We've been to Corfu, Lesbos and Crete"
" Don't talk to me about Corfu" she replied disparagingly
"We went there once and it were just like Sheffield"

Now, I've never been to Sheffield but I'm forced to conclude that it must be quite nice

I'd go for Leeds....

I'm guessing the job is in Wakefield?

I'm looking at a large number of jobs that generally fall in Leeds, Sheffile,d Huddersfield, Wakey, Barnsley, Doncaster, etc etc etc....

Its just thoughts.

Manchester is not an option. Cant stand the place, and its no way near as close as the other options.

Manchester is in Lancashire ffs!

Leeds is closer to North Yorkshire, so it wins. Sheffield does have some advantages. Ridgeway Moor is lovely and has a fantastic restaurant, The Old Vicarage.
