Hi All,

Went for a bike ride this afternoon and was cycling down a public footpath with a large detached house set back on the right. It had a wall along the front about 6' high with double iron gates also about 6' high. As I was cycling past I saw 2 pit bull type dogs (brown coloured but were very large almost great dane sized with a pitbull face) come sprinting across the garden to the gates. For a moment I panicked thinking they were going to jump the wall. Then to my horror they leapt the small post and rail fence to the side of the property and both blocked my path barking and snarling at me. I was terrified. I turned round slowly and started to cycle away but they were barking and circling me. Eventually they gave up and went back into the property over the post and rail fence. They are obviously some sort of guard dog but surely they should be on a chain if they can get out of the property?

I couldn't continue down the public footpath because of the dogs and had to turn round. If they had both decided to attack me I would have been seriously injured. I am sure if I had tried to carry on in the same direction they would have gone for me it was as if they were stopping anyone going past the property.

So - should I report the owner to the police / local council?

Report it to the police. What do you feel may happen if a mum walks down there with a baby in a pushchair? How would you feel if you didn't report it and something happened?

Report it and make sure you press on them just how dangerous you felt the situation was.

I would, before it's another story in the papers about some dogs mauling a little child.

Yes absolutely if it is a public right of way.

What if it had been young children cycling/walking?

Like you need to even ask - Report it.

Or, be nice and tell the owner

Then report it anyway

Genuine question and not just being a dog lover here.
But I have a Mastiff that is terrified of bicycles.
Not fussed about anything else, but goes for bikes.

Is this actually a cycle path or was it a footpath you chose to cycle down?
Might be why they went for ya? Might also explain why it all calmed down when you stopped moving.

Still doesn't excuse the owners not keeping the dogs secure.
I might try talking to them first assuming they dont have a burnt out escort on the drive.

OK, phoned the police non emergency line to be told they do not deal with this sort of thing it's the local council dog warden. Once reported they will then write to the owners of the house. Rang the dog warden and no answer so will try again tomorrow.

The path I was on is a public footpath / cycle path / bridleway.

Don't hesitate, report it.

Some things are worth a 'blind eye' and not interfering - I don't think this is one of them.

Why not just talk to the owners?
Why does everyone have to get the bloody authorities involved in everything?
Ok if they turn out to be ignorant tts then get the dog wardens involved.

So - I was supposed to risk entering the property with those two dogs loose to see if there was anyone in who might be receptive to being told they should control their pets??

They might not know their dogs can get out.
It might be doing them a service.
They might be glad to know their pets cant escape.
If the house was surrounded by garden and not reachable from the road I assume they'd have an intercom on the gate or some such.
Or does the postman fly over and drop it by parachute?

I don't believe for a second they do not know their dogs can get out because the post and rail fence at the side is an obvious escape point one dog leapt it like it wasn't there and the other just shot out between the rails.

Would you go and look for an intercom with two huge dogs circling and snarling at you or would you get out of the way? rolleyes

Ok...I don't know the layout etc. Fair point.

But in a more reasonable response could you not let them know somehow first without informing the bloody jobsworths at the council?
No one got hurt and it could be a preventable problem without getting big bloody brother involved again.

I would report it. I'd also be inclined to knock on their door and advise them that their dogs can get out and caused you alarm, fear and distress.. If someone else reports them and is scared they could get done under the Dangerous Dogs Act and the dogs could be destroyed..... Imagine if a family of four go out for their Sunday cycle and this happens to them.....

Police, and now.

My elderly father goes walking for exercise. What if it was him who came up against them? What's he going to do? Dissuade them with harsh language?

Police. Now.
