Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression that the Patron Saint of England was Saint George.
Listening to the radio today it seems as if Saint Patrick has taken over. He is the Patron Saint of Ireland isn't he.
So why do so many people celebrate a foreign saint and not our own.
I bet come April 23rd there will be little if any celebrating of our Patron Saint.

It's about time we celebrated our Patron Saint
& had a National Holiday.

right got that off my chest

They also said Saint Patrick was the patron saint of Nigeria, which makes him the patron saint of scammers...

ETA They celebrate St Patrick over here (England) because this is where all the Irish came when they ran out of potatoes. (Actually some of them stayed in Liverpool, whch is halfway between Ireland and England)

Saint Patrick is an excuse to get pissed. Saint George isn't?

Saint David's Day has already been this side of the border hehe

Hi everyone,
I don't reply on here often, but lurk quite a lot.
In my very humble opinion, the reason why so many in England celebrate St Patricks day, is simple, it's an excuse for a party at an Irish bar and get completely pissed on Guiness.

Beaten to it, by Darkslider!

Never really understood why non-Irish people with no links to Ireland celebrate St Patrick's day. 'An excuse to drink?' I hear you say? Perhaps, but these people don't normally need an excuse.....

Bastille day anyone?

Well people may "celebrate" St Patrick's Day but here in the UK we don't get a day off. Nor do we get a day off for St George (as you rightly point out) OR St David in Wales either.

So by all means, come St George's Day, go to the pub, drink real ale and hang an England flag from your upper windows. Back when I was a lad in Wales pretty much that's what happened on St David's Day. No flags. But people wore a daffodil or a little silk leek. rofl NOTHING WRONG WITH IT!

Enjoy whichever Saints days you decide to celebrate. yes

I thought St Patrick was the Patron Saint of binge drinking. So what's so wrong about us in the UK celebrating?

Because in a lot of the country we're not allowed wink for example last year Birmingham council (pretty sure it was brum)refused permission for a St Georges day parade on "security and health n safety" grounds......................please draw your own conclusions about the real reasons behind this descision biggrin

There was a massive St Patricks day parade here in Munich on sunday. Closed off one of the main routes in for a mile or two.

It was good to watch but i couldnt help thinking where the Irish / German connection is.

oh, and since when has it been St Patricks week? I saw this in the local Irish bar. Is it just an excuse for more drinking?

Paddy day is just an excuse to get drunk, or more specifically, to drink guiness.

Now, why don't we use George's day to celebrate and drink Carling? Its an English beer right? If the the Irish can have a national drinking day, then so can we biggrin
