Sorry thought you meant Newcastle 'up Hanley duck'.
I tried to take my hot rod to a car show in the pedestrianised centre area of Hanley. I spent an hour driving in circles, following one-way streets, dead ends, no entries, looking for signs to a place cars are not allowed to go......and I left in disgust. Good job it's only 30 miles from where I live, else I'd have been reeeeaaaally cross.Jesmond, is good. Ditto plcaes around the Central Station. Stay away from the Bigg Market and the middle bit of he Quayside, either side bits are ok.
There is a massive paintballing place in Cramlington (which is just North of Newcastle) which is good and not too expensive.

PS if you want a good restaurant in the centre of Newcastle try Blue Coyote. It's my favourite, and does really good steak. It's well positioned to then do a pub crawl down to the quayside.

Activities:
Pretty much anything you fancy doing is near by / easy to get to - indoor / outdoor go karting, paint balling, climbing, quad biking, off roading etc. You can also do a surfing lesson on Tynemouth beach which is something i've done before and was a right laugh. Getting Fish and Chips from Marshalls in Tynemouth Village is essential afterwards.
Going Out:
Depends where you stay but you certainly won't be short of places to get a drink. I imagine you'll want to go out in town so...
Main areas:
Bigg Market - worth walking through late on a Fri / Sat night to see what horrors are present. Treat it more like a visit to a safari park than a place to drink. Charva rating 10/10
Quayside - Was the `posh` bars bit a few years ago but is now not far off Bigg Market standards in some places. Worth heading down there to check out the views earlier on in the day/eve. If the weather's nice go and have a beer outside the Pitcher and Piano down by the Millenium Bridge, then do a mini pub crawl towards town centre. Charva Rating 7/10
Town Centre around the station - Much better bars here recently. Has become a big drinking area. Lots of places to eat and drink. With the station behind you go to the bars in front or to the right. To the left is the Gay area. Some recommendations of bars where people 25+'s go: Popolo, Tokyo, Florita's, Perdu, Tup Tup Palace, Coco V, Living Room. Charva Rating 3/10
The Gate - Up at the top end of Town. Loads more bars with many of them contained within a kind of shopping mall for restaurants, cheap bars and a casino. Be warned, the strong lighting means most women will be emanating a not so soft orange glow. Charva Rating 8/10.
If you're not staying in the centre, stay in Jesmond. Lots of hotels on Osborne road with bars underneath that are very popular in the summer. A bit further down Osborne Road (the nicer end )Kensington House Aparthotel is nice.
Loads of proper pubs about too - have a look on www.theburglarsdog.co.uk for amusing reviews.

Like has been said there a few areas around Newcastle to drink/eat.
As a local to Newcastle I think the Quayside is complete st now, full of stag and hen parties. There are 2 bars I might go in odd times and they are the Pitcher & Piano and the bar in Malmasion. However the Pitcher need to be renovated as it's a mess now, only go if I'm eating in Cafe 21 which is not far from them.
There are a few bars around Grey Street, these are Barluga and The Living Room. They are ok Barluga is a good Saturday afternoon bar.
Just around the corner from Grey Street, is Pilgrim Street which has Popolos and Secco. Popolos gets busy on Friday and Saturday nights, crowd is ok, and they have a good drinks selection.
There are loads of bars around Central Station area now worth a visit too just depends what you want. The Forth is good.
If you want to laugh at a load of tts go to The Gate or walk down the Bigg Market, it is a fking joke.
Food wise Newcastle is really lacking in that department and in all honesty you could not pay me to eat in some places. Stowell Street have a load of Chinese places, one of the better is The Landmark. Cafe 21 is good behind the Law Courts on the Quayside too. There are a few other places too and most of the betters bars do snack type food during the day, which will mop up the beer.
Enjoy.

I must add that when we went, we were all really impressed with Newcastle. Everyone was very friendly and up for a laugh. Didn't encounter any hostility like you do in some city centres.
Be warned - they're quite big on their dress codes so make sure you're all smart or you're likely to not be allowed in some places.
