Recommend a good pub in Letchworth
Discussion
It's my Girlfriends Grandads 80th birthday in a couple of weeks, and I have been given the duty of booking a pub to go for a meal at.
I've never been to Letchworth before, so don't know where to start. We need good food, good value and in (or very close to) Letchworth.
Any suggestions? Over to you...

When I lived over there we often had celebration dinners at Redcoats at Redcoats green - a couple of miles out of Letchworth. Superb food and service, very good wine list.

Okay, iirc there is the wilbury(beefeater), the two chimneys(general eating house),the three magnets(wetherspoons) and the hogshead! near by in hitchin, there is the 3 moorhens(does good food) and also the orange tree, both of which can be found from the stevenage north junction on the a1! After that, you would need to head out quite a way to find decent pubs that do food!
There's the Fox at Willian (Letchworth outskirts). http://www.foxatwillian.co.uk/ I haven't been there myself, but I've heard it's quite upmarket / special.
Other than that, there aren't any exceptional pubs for meals. Redcoats has been mentioned. Three Horseshoes on Norton Road do reasonable food. The wife and I like the local Italian L'artista - restaurant though.

Dammit, i knew i had forgotten a couple of pubs. The 3 horseshoes is indeed a good pub, and although the fox used to be a good pub, i think they have gone for the ala carte type food!Other than that, there aren't any exceptional pubs for meals. I'm avoiding The Orange Tree TBH - this is based upon a meal experience there a few weeks ago - long delay on preparing food, cold food, poor service. Pity really, as we have had some good meals there in the past.
Another one near Redcoats(http://www.redcoats.co.uk/) is Hermit of Redcoats (http://www.hermitofredcoats.co.uk/) I've not tried this one, but someone at work has had good meals there in the past.

Seconded for Redcoats, Fox at Willian and 3 Horseshoes, in that order. Used to love all theose pubs when I lived over that way. Also try the Carriage house between Henlow and Shefford if it's not too far!
The 3 Horseshoes is probably the most affordable of the above. It also benefits from having a pool table tucked away at the back of the pub Another good venue if you're prepared to travel 10 - 15 mins from Letchworth, and can book well in advance is the Black Horse in Ireland (http://blackhorseireland.com/site.htm).

Interesting / uninteresting factiod time....
Letchworth, when it was designed and built, was not allowed to have any pubs due to the religious nature of the town fathers.
Which is why there or so few there.
When I lived in Baldock as a kid, we had dozens of pubs because everyone living in Letchworth had to go elsewhere for their beer. Only 1 pub existed in Letchworth center, and it wasn't somewhere you'd want to go.

Well thanks for all the replies; much appreciated.
Snowy Slopes - Thanks for the PM - My other halfs family are from down there, but they never go for pub food. They seem to know where these places are, but have just never eaten at them!
So...
It sounds like my best bets are The 3 Horseshoes, Redcoats or the Black Horse.
I'll have a look on their websites at the menu and go from there.
Thanks again for all your help
