This utterly barbaric practice needs to be stopped right now. It is this kind of thing that really confirms my negative attitude to religion in general.

And "sewn up" FFS. That must be incredibly dangerous surely? How are they supposed to have kids?

Unfortunately, some "cultures" need dragging - screaming & kicking - into the 21st century.

Does it help keep the birth rate down?

Maybe the NHS could go round the council estates of the UK carrying this procedure out.

People need to accept that other countries have different cultures.

Other countries do have different cultures, but people in this country should be abiding by the laws of this country, or indeed whatever country they are in.

It is not the 'right' of one person to mutilate another citing tradition or culture as the reason. It's barbaric and backward and there's absolutely no justification for it.

In the programme I watched on TV some time back, it was a practice carried out by women with women very much the motivating force behind it. If the family in that programme is typical, then attitudes will be hard to change.

IIRC the programme was centred around Nigeria.

Quite honestly, MALE circumcision for any reason other than medical, seems barbaric too.

I mean in this country it is socially acceptable to go out get absolutely wasted and take home the nearest person without knowing their name. Before taking the walk of shame and eating a greasy kebab that you fall asleep on.

Maybe we have got it wrong?

Who is anyone to say which society of any in the world is the right one? certainly doesn't seem to be ours where someone is innocent once they have been killed. A person who's house is not like Fort Knox is to blame for not having enough security on their home when someone breaks in. Not the fact that a scrote has broken in.

rolleyes at some of the comments.

Evolution/Nature didn't bring forth those pieces of female anatomy just for man's 'culture' to multilate at their whim.

Its there for a biological purpose.

Fear of feamle sexuality is no basis to slash & hack.

Agreed, whilst female circumcision is arguably more damaging, ritual male circumcision is just as unnecessary, and ultimately just as in female circumcision unnecessarily removes healthy sensitive tissue.

Of course these days if you criticise the proponents of male circumcision, you are likely to be branded anti-islamic, or anti semetic.

Very true.

I accept lots of different religious practices and different cultures. For the simple reason that who am I to say what is right or wrong?

Both male and female circumcision are barbaric acts and quite literally anyone who condones it or practices it are scum.

You get jail for just having a nude kiddy picture on your computer these days, but mutilate them and it's called religion.

You are a person who can hold a valid opinion, and you should not be afraid to hold that opinion for fear of offending anothers "culture". Personally I find the "different culture" justification for any form of genital mutilation pretty weak, and it doesnt make me accept that mutilation as right.
