Octoberfest this year, some advice please...
Discussion
Im nearing the end of a very long noght shift and i cant get the help pages on the octoberfest website to make sense!
Is there anyone that went last year or is planning to this year that can help me out please with the following questions?
1. What villages/towns around munich are best to stay in for getting to the fest?
2. Does the public transport run all night from the fest to said villages/towns?
3. Is it best to book into the beer tents in advance?
4. 3 pints of guiniess and im pissed, should i get extra practice in before i go?
Thanks in advance!

I've only ever gone during the week, but :
1. I always stay in Garching, in the Mercure/Ibis that is there at a reasonable price. Direct train into the centre and easy to get back. I was paralytic when I last did it but still managed to get back to the hotel room.
2. No, I think it stops around midnight.
3. I didn't know you could book, but I usually arrive about 3pm and settle in.
4. You will need a lot of practice. The German beer is in very big portions, is very easy to drink fast, both because of the quality and the general atmosphere and it really creeps up on you.

Tents close @ 11pm IIRC. We then spent 3 hours on the underground trying to go 2 stops back to my mates apartment bloody German signs (I was sober of course ), so based on that, I'm not sure when they close the underground.1. Yeah, the tents close at 11pm, wasn't sure about the weekend because I've only been on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Advantage of going during the week is that it's probably mostly Europeans rather than Brits and Antipodeans.
I went last year and got this advice:

And others have said this:

If you stay in Salzburg (long story), try not to miss the last train.
Trying to wave down a taxi to take 5 people to Austria, then having to endure an hour of aqua planing on the motorway whilst hammered is not ideal, especially if one of your party has the train tickets for those that did make the train.
However arriving dry before those that did make the train is priceless

The Hacker tent is good, so is the Lowenbrau - in fact they're all bloody brilliant !!
Aerlingus are starting flights from Gatwick to Munich soon, you can book now - about 90 quid. Easyjet was about the same but further away from me.
Most hotels were wanting about 100 quid per night but found a place that was 50quid per night right near the station.
Problem with staying outside Munich is what do you do at 11 when it closes ??
If you're staying in the heart of the city you can carry on and see girls dancing and everything !!
