The OH has gone big time on putting candles on during the evenings, no bad thing, lovely smell from some of them.

What I am after is those long things, which I always thought were called "Tapers" to light them with. When some of the bigger ones burn down, the outside is till intact, resulting in the wick being right inside the candle, and almost impossible to light with a lighter,

Can you still buy them, and where would I find some.

That's what priests use.

Well, when you're 140 years old with lungs the size of a hamster, and you've got 20,000 candles to put out, a little help helps.

Surely you just need some of those long matches you can buy in any supermarket?

Apologies for a sensible comment but shouldn't you be trimming the wax away from the outside if it is not melting. Allows oxygen in and for the candle to continue to burn more efficient like.

God. . .what a boring post (mine that is). . .smile

Make sure you've got plenty of ventilation. As a long time candle user I was shocked at how much greasy sooty stuff condenses on non-porous surfaces in the room concerned. Have stopped using candles now.

You can still get them, we get ours from catering suppliers so you could try a few.
Do you have a local cash and carry for food that you can access?

Extra long matches or a long lighter will do the job and be less messier.
