Was chillin in the lounge when the dog started to bark for no reason. Went into the kitchen and there was a terrible smell of burning. We have 14 halogen lights set in the kitchen ceiling. I noticed smoke coming from behind the switch. There are two switches because they control different sections of the kitchen. Half of the lights don't work but i cant tell if the switch is on or off(dimmer type switches) Is there anything i can do to disable that switch or will it be ok. Worried about it causing a fire. I'm on my own in the house. No men to help. Any ideas?

Go to the fusebox and turn off the fuse for the downstairs lights. Suggest you switch on a lamp plugged into the sockets first or get a torch.

Fuse box will have things called RCD's in it. It's more than likely labelled but if not, switch them down one at a time till the kitchen ones go out.

If you don't know which one is the downstairs lights, turn em all off and switch em on one at a time till you find the right one...then switch that one off again.
Again a torch would be a good thing before you start.

Assuming it is a modern type fusebox they should be like little switches.

If not labelled (which they should be) then turn on the lights in the kitchen and switch them off one at a time until the kitchen lights go out then turn the rest back on.

Worst case scenario, tuen the master switch off, and kill all of the power.

Go to bed with a torch once you have established there is no fire.

Most likely the dimmer has been set on "very dim" which means it soaks up a lot of power, and has overheated.

You are right to be worried. An electical short caused a fire which burned my sister's house down.

Just pull out the fuses, or trip the circuit breakers one by one if they are not labelled. It really sin;t al that difficult.

Once you have cut power to the cicuit in question, pour yourself a nightcap and go to bed.

Just go to the fusebox, and flick the BIG RED SWITCH!

If everything goes dark, and your PC no longer works, then you have found the right switch.

Then worry about it tomorrow once you have established there is no fire.

If there is a fire, then call 999.
