Is this a strange thing to do?

Some of my freinds thought that it was weird that I went out to a bar alone the other night, but I can't see why?

Anyone else do this?

Yes it is strange.

No I would not do that.

The exception would be going to the bar on my own because I am meeting someone there.. However, if I got there early rather than stand in the bar alone I'd probably go for a stroll around nearby...

Depends.

When I'm away on business and no colleagues are staying in the same hotel I may well wander out for dinner and end up in a quiet pub reading the paper in the corner with a pint afterwards. Its a good way to relieve the tedium of identikit hotels.

'Bars' to me however suggests a pretty busy bustling sort of place and the idea of going to one alone and standing at the bar looking like some sort of sex pest is not a good one.

The following comment has absolutely no correlation to the OP, however...

The only man that used to drink on his own in one of our local pubs was the man that used to follow people into the loos and got nicknamed 'The Willy Watcher!'

It's a strange thing - I've worked all around Europe for ten years and always went to bars alone without a second thought. Sometimes I'd get chatting to interesting people and sometime I wouldn't but it was never a problem to me. Doing the same in England makes me feel really uncomfortable and I'm never exactly sure why.

I always go and read the paper and have a quick pint on my own if no one else is about, (Shift work is a pain sometimes) but whenever I go out on the lash there is always a creepy and slightly sweaty bloke stood on his own, a good 20 years older than the target demographic of said bar. Don't become this person.

I'll occasionally go to one of the locals (country pubs) on my own. If there's people there I know, all to the good, if not then I'll have a pint of 6X and read a shooting mag.

Occasionally in my bachelor days I would head into town on my own, was damned good fun if there were enough single girlies out. Was sometimes crap so I'd head home and watch a movie - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

This is eactly the same for me.

Whenever im abroad I can go to a bar and meet some interesting people who speak english and have a good time.
Doing the same in the UK would just be weird.

I think its because if your abroad you are instantly more interesting, just because your not a local. People are generally more hostpitable to English people abroad.

Similar. When I was travelling, I thought nothing of it. However, I do go out on my own at home too (although it's Scotland, rather than England). That really started because I was working from home for a year and was in a new city, not knowing anyone. You do start to notice the lack of human contact and interaction - finding a couple of locals was my solution.

As a result, most of my friends now are barstaff biggrin (I don't mean I only see them in their professional capacity though tongue out)

I don't think anything of going to a bar with a book or paper for a couple of pints. Most of the time I don't get to read much at all as I get talking to people.

hehe no.

I was just bored and thought 'hell why not'. Got chatting to a few people, but couldn't help but feel a bit odd there on my own.

Maybe it's because none of my freinds really go out for drinks any more, so I haven't been out in a while.
