Shocked by lack of security
Discussion
I work for a large delivery company and deliver to many places, some insignificant, some of high importance.
I deliver to the MOD's logistics and supply depots quite reguarly and while these aren't deemed high risk for terrorism etc there is still the chance and as such vans are reguarly searched and persons have to report to security offices and get given passes once ID's and other details are checked.
Today however was different, i had a delivery for one of the Army Barracks that is in the same area. Now i have never been in here before and my vision of a barracks was high security, no-one allowed in without clearance or escort etc. Not so, i drove up to the barrier at which point 2 little chinese looking men in Securicor jackets looked at me and mumbled something, I told them i had a delivery for the guard room to which they opened the barrier and let me straight through. It was about half a mile down to the guard room and in this distance i passed numerous buildings, a huge vehicle workshop and a large storage area for Army vehicles, there was about 30 trucks/land rovers/field guns etc parked up. Before i got to the guard room i also passed the Officers Mess and the barracks command center. Once i reached the guard room i had to wait for the relavent officer to come and sign for the packages, whilst waiting i was stood in a room where rifles were in an unlocked rack and the soldiers on duty were back and forth between rooms.
I didnt think about it at the time but on reflection with the recent events in Northern Ireland i would have thought a little bit of priority would have been given to the security of these places. I know i was in a livered vehicle of a world renowned company but the guys on the gate had never seen me before and didnt even ask to see my company ID before letting me thru the gates and allowing me access to some pretty important parts of the base. God only knows what would have happened if someone got in with a vehicle bomb
Thoughts?

Anyone remember the coach full of day tripping pensioners driving straight onto the Faslane site without being stopped?
Very well indeed. In fairness though, MOD Plod were tight as a drum after that.
Try it these days and you get to meet a very, very scary looking Alsation who would just love to tear you apart like a piece of warm bread.
I don't know where they get those dogs from. I've never seen a load of Alsations with that much muscle and teeth anywhere else. Genuinely scary canines.

When I was a courier, I used to be staggered at how lax some MOD security was. It seemed to vary enormously from site to site, and week to week though, they are obviously not singing off the same hymn sheet. Strictest security was a british american tobacco, bloody jobsworth security there made it akin to trying to access area 51.

Don't tell me they're outsourcing guard duty to a security firm?I deliver to the MOD's logistics and supply depots quite reguarly and while these aren't deemed high risk for terrorism etc there is still the chance and as such vans are reguarly searched and persons have to report to security offices and get given passes once ID's and other details are checked.

When I was selling furniture I have delivered to two Air Force bases.
One is a front line fighter base and the other is a training base.
At the front line base I was escorted by a service man with a gun.
At the training base I was just old to watch out when crossing the landing strip.
I felt safer with a the gun man.

Those dogs though are just different league. I don't care how hard you are, they would open you up like a can of beans and nothing you could do would stop them. Even my friends who are in Commanchio, RM, have a serious respect for them, and give them as wide a berth as possible when they play at 'intruder alert' on base.

In fairness if someone drives up to the front gate with a truck bomb then its already too late.
I stood guard on the front gate of Shaiba airfield in 2003 on my own with around 200 Iraqi civilians milling around. One mean looking chap with a big gun and a radio is all you need most of the time.
