claiming tax rebate - how difficult?
Discussion
i understand you can claim a rebate for anything upto the last 6 years?
i have just been made aware that i failed to claim a rebate when working my internship 2002-2003 as i paid the full rate of tax destpite being a student.
i guess i have until 1st april to claim this back [£1k or so, would be nice atm] but have no idea how to go about it.
its not that straight forward as i was working in wales at the time so the tax went to the welsh revenue office, with an incorrect NI number that was never put right.
who's best to contact - welsh or english IR - and how many hoops do i have to jump through to get my mitts on the cash?

There is no separate "English or Welsh IR". In fact, the Inland Revenue (IR) nno longer exists as it is now called HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). HMRC is the tax authority for the entire UK.
If you have a current correct tax number and/or NI number, you should contact your CURRENT tax district and explain the situation to them. You will get the contact telephone number from the most recent Coding Notice you have received. You should have received a Coding Notice in the past few weeks as all the 2009/10 PAYE Codings have been recently sent out by HMRC.
They may be able to handle your query over the phone. Alternatively, they may ask you to write to explain your situation. However, whatever you do, get your claim in as quickly as pssoible before it becomes time expired. Keep a hard copy of ALLL communications with the Revenue and make telephone notes if dealing withn them over the phone.
