Got thinking after reading the superhero thread. A lot of people failed to rate sequals to films, which seems to be the norm.
There are the sequals a lot of people rate higher:
The Dark Knight, Aliens, Terminator 2, Godfather 2 etc.
But what about trilogies? Or Tetrologies? What series of films has the 3rd or later outshone the first?
I'll start of with my vote: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Obviously, the Brechtian pathos of 'Buttreamers 19: Co-ed girls go wild' made it a high point in the series, but vol 23 does have it's fans and it's central premise of man's inhumanity and the growing disconnectedness of all things in the new millenium made it one of the more memorable and thought provoking works of the genre.

Back to the Future. It was total crap when it was released so it had to get better. Two generations on and it was still crap but the last one was the best cos you knew it was the last
:splutters: I damned near snorted a crisp up my nose reading that!
Back to the Future was & is a fantastic film, perfect mind junk. Also including the delorian & we know the history behind that car despite it being a nail.
1st one was good, 2nd was also good & the third was good again.
So all around goodness.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. (I know, not technically a trilogy of a single story but it's got one protagonist all the way through.)
Can't say I'm a fan of the Buttreamers oeuvre tbh, much prefer the Renaissance Classicism of "Milky Jugs" vols 1 to 6 which do actually get milkier as series goes on up to the climax of the series, vol 7.

Indianna Jones and the Last Crusade was better than Temple of Doom but maybe not as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Austin Powers 2; The Spy Who Shagged Me was the best of the three.
Mad Max 2; The Road Warrior also best of the three.
Die Hard 3; Better than Die Hard 2
John Rambo better than Rambo 2 & 3
Empire Strike Back also best of the original trilogy.

Not sure I agree with that. Fellowship was the best film, which captured the spirit of the book very well indeed.Jedi was rubbish compared to SW and ESB. Alien Resurrection was poop. Matrix pt3 sucked.
I'm not sure I can name a final installment of a series which was the best. Ah... Kill Bill 2 was better than 1 (if that even counts as it should have been 1 film).

Althought I do agree matrix 3 was rubbish!

I loved "Back to the Future" when it first came out.
The second film had too many convolutions.
The third was fine.
But the first still stands out for its sheer humour.

The secret I believe is they share the same DOP and lighting cameraman as "Anal Teens 4"...pure visual splendour. Can't say I'm a fan of the Buttreamers oeuvre tbh, much prefer the Renaissance Classicism of "Milky Jugs" vols 1 to 6 which do actually get milkier as series goes on up to the climax of the series, vol 7.

You see it's little details like that that often get overlooked by the amateur viewer. The professional can observe such things while concentrating on other things in hand, so to speak.
"Well would you look at the way that has been lit. Beautiful. Looks like they're using polarizing fi-i-I-ILTER!"
