InterRail Route

Here is the the route that me and a few mates plan to do in July of this year.

Didn't know you could still InterRail. I did 4 weeks back in 1987 with my American girlfriend, so had the time to go a bit further afield. We did all those cities and they were all great, although if you're only doing one city in Italy I'd recommend Rome / Vatican City or Florence over Milan, but that's a personal preference thing. It really is a memorable experience; better than a fortnight in Ibiza getting sunburned by day and rat-arsed by night.

I think you're right to allow a couple of days for each city. We were determined to squeeze in as many as possible, so we travelled mostly during the night and spent one day in each city, with the exception of Paris (where she had family) and Gibraltar (where I have family). If I was doing it again I'd go for quality over quantity.

I'd advise you to travel light; I managed a month with just a small denim duffel bag. Take loads of spare memory cards for the digital camera, and plenty of rubbers if you're planning to get lucky. Always make sure your InterRail pass, travellers cheques and passport are secure; I took a money belt which can be concealed beneath clothing. That way you don't lose everything if your bag is lost or stolen. IME Barcelona was particularly bad for pick pockets and assorted villains.

Happy days! You'll love it. Keep your InterRail pass and all your bus tickets, hotel bills etc... I've still got mine in the money belt I took. Makes a nice memento.

Brings the memories flooding back:

Losing my virginity in the Hotel Atlantic, Calais. Great start to the holiday, and kind of set the scene for the next 4 weeks

Selling a tatty pair of Levi 501s to a Yugoslavian bloke in Zagreb for about 1 million Dinar. I thought I was rich until I realised it was only 50p Rampant inflation and frequent revaluations were the order of the day.

Sleeping on the deck of the night boat from Greece to Italy, and thinking it would be a good idea to sleep beside the funnel to stay warm. Woke in the morning looking like Al Jolson The captain took pity on us and let us shower in his cabin.

Nearly getting arrested for taking a bath in the sea at the public beach in Nice at about 5am. I was just washing the soap off my bks when the Gendarmes appeared. We were advised to keep our pants on next time and sent on our way.

On the down side, I had long hair and dark skin and looked like every wanted terrorist poster at every border crossing. I spent a lot of time being questioned by customs. And she was a typical screwed up yank, who spent half the holiday sobbing and wondering why her father didn't love her. She couldn't wait to get home and see her shrink

I think they do direct flights from Paris to Barcelona, you'll save a lot of time.

I would try to concentrate on one area in Europe - Northern/Central etc

Milan - Barcelona is a bit of a trek for one city.

That was the plan. Fly out to Paris then at the end of the trip, fly back from Barcelona.

Careful you don't try and do too much.

Six cities. I make that six days traveling. Which gives you 8 days to see the cities. Bear in mind that unless you spend 2 nights in a city, you'll be carrying all your stuff around with you.

If it was me, I'd skip Paris, and Berlin at least.

But that's just my opinion FWIW.

I see where your coming from. Berlin was built in because all the people on the trip want to go. Paris just because we have got really cheap flights arranged.

It's getting the balance right between doing too much and not doing enough in the 2 weeks. I guess you could call it 'Travelling on a small scale for people who missed out when they were students'.

Yeh always a tough call. Specially if there's a fair few people to keep happy.

Looks like some planning of military precision is called for.
