Right, the missus is in need of a reasonable pocket knife, but I've not needed one for ages, so I don't really know what there is about these days. All of my knives are a bit big or a bit much for what she needs. All she needs is something for cutting bailing twine and similar stuff whilst looking after her horse. I used to use an Opinel knife for this sort of thing, but is there anything better/longer lasting out there? Any and all suggestions welcome!

I (and parents) always had Opinels. Top bits of kit. We also used them for cutting twine, and all the other things that go with farming.

How the hell is a girl going to hit a bit of string at any range with that? hehe
Although it would get the horse burgers on the way...... wink

How about something like this

Gerber Junior

Lots of other knives on there too, I have my Leatherman knife that I use daily at work.

She wants a knife to cut string, not stab black teenagers.

Fashioned by some old guys in a workshop in Sheffield. Hand made.

Quaint, but a bit more personal perhaps?
My God I couldn't look at that page any longer. I think he needs a bit of help with the old website design.

As for the Gerber, they are very handy, not a huge blade, very useful. If she so wishes to stab a passing black child, I'm sure it will be of use, without being fatal.

Is there really a need for that sort of comment?
I was replying to a question.

If you're wanting it for a Christmas present I'd go to the petrol station and buy whatever they've got NOW!

Nah, I've got all that covered. She's just been eyeing my knives up, some of which she's just likely to stab herself with! The old dear wasn't blessed with a massive amount of manual co-ordination. wink

Sorry. I do a fair bit of self moderating these days, trying, and failing, to thin out my pointless drivel a bit hehe

I thought to myself, haven't I got anything better to do on Christmas Eve than agree with criticism of someone's crap website? biggrin

spyderco UK penknife

not cheap, but brilliant. i've used mine on our farm every day for 2 yrs now and it's perfect. i sharpen it on the spyderco sharpmaker smile

it's not tiny, but equally not huge. it sits in your pocket very comfortably with it's wire clip. it'll get through any cutting job you need it to.

they do come with black or dark green handles too smile

it's also legal to carry in public smile

look at www.heinnie.com - great service.

But for seven quid you get something that doesn't make you look like a climber, and also does the job as well??

odd.

sure sure - and a porsche and a yaris are exactly the same, aren't they?

look at the quality of the steel and other materials they use. i guarantee the spydie will hold an edge much longer than your £7 knife. it will also have much closer tolerances, so no blade play

combine that with the one-handed opening and closing of the spyderco and it makes a very handy tool.

and lastly - you *care* that you may look like a climber if you're not one? it's a great knife. if climbers choose to use it , it's because it's dependable enough to do the job they need, time after time.

yes, i'm a knife collector. the vast majority of my collection are spydies biggrin. the UKPK is the only one that gets use though smile

You know what I mean though, knife I linked, looks good, does the job, last for ages, and cost under a tenner. She wants to cut bailing twine, not wild fruit from the Himalayas.
