Letter was a standard template. I used to be a recruiter (I know) so I practiced what I preached and went back to the department for constructive feedback and it appeared to be a statement which was retracted after it was mentioned. I am really annoyed about it so will not make any rash decisions but wanted to vent as my GF has heard enough.

If so, that's ridiculous. Especially if you were told this was the reason by the employers.
