Vauxhall have offered its employees at Ellesmere Port up to 9 month sabaticals with 30% pay if they agree to not work during that time.
As I am unmarried, have no children or a mortgage I would welcome something like this and would take the opportunity to do some travelling or even do another less stressfull job for a short while.
Any other opinions on this?

I take it you will be paid 30% of your salary and have a job to return to in 9 months. Bargain.
Go travel. You have guaranteed money coming in and can do casual work wherever it is you happen to go. You could take on some charity work if you fancied. Or simply get to some locations that are too hard to go to on the two week summer break.
I'd have loved the opportunity meself.
Sounds like a cracking deal. Ok, its not a lot of money, but what do you expect. 30% salary would be enough to do some backpacking and at the end of it you get to come back to a job. Well, OK, maybe not a job, but maybe some redundancy pay or similar....
What an excellent idea. However, employers such as GM and Ford are pretty good and will offer good terms in situations like this. Gone are the days of just laying off hundreds of workers, though obviously this costs money and they don't exactly have a lot of that at the moment!

t.Forget the travelling, a waste of money. You might learn what things are like in other countries, but unless you are planning to emigrate that knowledge won't help you.
Instead, spend the time learning useful stuff, things that will help advance your emloyment prospects, or even lead to successful self-employment

Same here. I have a full time job and if my employer offered this I would take it like a shot. As the saying goes you could be dead tomorrow.
