Aircraft, RAF and related topics are a PH fave, so thought I'd post this link to a BBC show tonight.

Thanks for that, will record it for BG jnr, he's joining the Air Cadets next week. If it's not too off topic, does anyone know much about the Air Cadets? I haven't had a look on the internet yet.

It's due for an update, I'm reliably told by someone in the know, but not until next year. But, it does have all the info about the cadets and joining etc, including a map to find the nearest sqn to go and take a look at.

If I'd have known about them when I was the right age I'd have joined up, nowhere else as a youth organisation (youth clubs, scouts etc) do you get the opportunity to go flying and do your glider license, top stuff!

Hi BG, I was in the ATC for several years, great fun, could be hard work but I would certainly recommend it to anyone.

I was in the air cadets as a sprog. For me (and many others) it was a brilliant organisation with opertunities on offer that not even the likes of the scouts etc could get close to.
The biggest thing I got from it was personal development but I believe I was very lucky to be at one of the best sqns in the country with some really inspirational characters running the show.

I am still involved in the organisation as a pilot (learned the skills and got the qualifications as a cadet), but have met many dubious characters from other sqns. I can't see the sqns they come from being anywhere near as good as the one I was on.

So I think your little one should try cadets, but try to find a sqn that excels rather than just the closest one to home.

Its much better than I thought it would be. I don't care particularly about the RAF; but, the program so far is much more about social history. Suspect Bomber Harris is going to get a bit of kicking now, the Hull research bit was really interesting!

Did enjoy this. Not what I thought, but very interesting in the "psychology" of the pilots, and hopefully ordibary people will appreciate some of what they went through.

I did enjoy (if that is the right word) this programme, but thought it a pretty poor show by HMG for not giving any recognition to Bomber Command.

A big thank-you to the Dutch, for holding the yearly service, in memory of those that never made it back.

Terrible thing...envy.

I thought the program was interesting enough, but was completely mis-titled.
Some great archive footage, moving recollections, wasted in a dreary exploration of the morality or lack there of in bombing.

LOL, no!! Armed services are not really my thing! Fine for those who choose to do it but not for me!! But, the program was really good mainly because it concentrated more on the people than the objects. It was an interesting take on the subject and not the program I expected at all; in fact I wasnt going to watch it at all but I happened to be in and it sucked me in!

Many moons ago, and people can put all the nerdy symbols up they want to.....

But I had plenty of goes on the range. Flying including pilots giving me control before the wheels left the ground. More flying in assorted winged things. Summer camp where you shot more rifles, flew in more planes and some pilot thought it was fun to have a VC10 kitted out for loads and a few seats full of cadets doing the weightless thing. Fun in gliders and more chipmonks and more shooting. And other stuff like the Duke of Edinburgh award etc. It was over 25 years or more for me. Apparently a mate got a ride in a two seater Lightning whilst on summer camp in Germany. The others did not deny it, straws were drawn for one cadet only, he won. Sod. I got a Dominie over Gibraltar. But also got to see some Jaguars "strafe " the runway.
