Pre Xmas diet info req'd.
Discussion
I'm looking at losing a few lbs so that when the turkey bites, my belt won't. So does anyone know whats the best grub to avoid and what sort of simple food groups should I be going for? I know enough to know that if I stop eating completely, I probably won't lose as much weight as I might if I ate certain foods and avoided others, and I know too, that I can't be arsed to wade through pages of lifestyle diet info.
Any insightful, real world, male-centric advice appreciated. I don't have the time or inclination to spend time preparing bowls of delicious steaming skinnie food, but if there's somthing out there thats as simple and as straightforward to get down my neck as baked spuds or pasta, but might help.. then I wanna know about it! I eat quite healthily normally - I don't drink or eat cheese/butter etc, but I do need a 10 day blitz.
Cheers in advance.

10 days will do sod all to your weight - it takes about a month for your body to start shedding fat.
Simply follow the basics - don't eat too much (eat to satisfy hunger, not to fill up completely - and check your portion sizes haven't crept up over the years), drink plenty of water, avoid anything too sugary or fatty, aim for your 5 portions of fruit & veg a day.
If you can get some kind of exercise in (even if it's a 20 minute walk around the block at lunch) that will help too.

I run four times a week, I eat lots of fruit and my body (although slowing down) does show signs of weight loss after a couple of weeks. Good point about water, and I heard that fruit is bad for weight loss, which might be leading me to cut back on it? I don't want this to be a exemplary diet statement, I just need to losae a little around in the waist in anticiopation of chucking it back on! Looks like death by cous cous..

Seriously, ignore all the womens-magazine faddiness and "x will make you put on weight" or "you can eat as much y as you like". It's purely down to calorie defecit. Eat fewer calories than you use and you WILL lose weight - about a pound for every 3500 kcals you don't eat. The only reason to avoid particularly sugary or fatty foods is that they're very calorie-heavy but tend not to fill you up much so you have to eat lots of them to satisfy hunger.
Eat what you like, just do it in moderation.

Slightly O/T, but could someone explain why people recomend drinking lots of water. The body has a wonderful mechanism for regulating water levels - too much and it sticks it in your bladder.
Detox - what do you think the liver does?
Bro-biotic - useful if you've had a very bad dose of the runs, but more likely to do nothing but increase the health of the manufacturer's bank balance.

Cut out alcohol, ditch the carbs, especially the simple ones; sugar, white bread, white rice etc. A low GL diet will do wonders.
Akers - should pasta to be included in that carbs death list?FlossyThePig said:

I thought it was 'proved' a while back that the water thing was a complete myth and all you need is enough to keep you hydrated, anything more was a waste.Detox - what do you think the liver does?

1) Don't cut out carbs. Idiots do that. Google "Atkins diet dangers". Reduce your alcohol intake to zero; eat less pasta, bread, noodles, etc.
2) Fat doesn't make you fat. (Butter, lard, etc won't make you fat.)
3) Do more exercise. To the point when you find it difficult to talk.
Despite all these clever diets, the key thing is, as someone pointed out, calorie deficit. I've looked at them all. Most of them are idiotic and, unless you are a trained dietician, dangerous. If you must go on a diet of some sort, do research into the GI diet. It's not really a diet. It's a healthy lifestyle. Snag is, you won't lose much weight this side of Easter.

Eat less, get out more.Yes the water thing is total horse... and three litres a day is not good for you. The liver asorbs most of its water from your food anyway.
Most diets recommend drinking water as it MAY act as a food substitue - ie stop making you feel hungry all the time.
In my opinion, you need to move from three meals a day to six meals.
1. A cup full of museli or fibre with semi skimmed and a glass of orange juice. (when you wake up)
2. two pieces of wholemeal toast about an hour later
3. early lunch, soup or baked potato (or simliar)
4. Afternoon snack - fruit or energy bar
5. Dinner - protein so meat and veg or eggs etc
6. Snack - personally I go for anothe rbowl of cereal or grapefruit.
Overall you should be aiming for about 2000 calories a day and about one hour of moderate exercise, eg 10000 steps continous walking or a 40 minute swim etc. That will create a calorie defiency in your body of about 500 calories a day - which over a week will mean you lose about 1 lb in weight.
Even if you don't make radical changes - don't eat crisps, chocolate, drink alcohol or skip an exercise session.
This year I have lost 21 lbs and sucessfully gone from 15 a day smoker to running a marathon.

I would suggest a Low GL based diet rather than GI.GI = Glycemic Index. I.e. how much energy is contained in a particular food
GL = Glycemic Load. This also takes account of how quickly the energy from foods are released and metabolised.
As has already been said the key is to be in calorific deficit. Carbs = Calories.
Complex carbs, taken in moderation, will provide a steady blood sugar level. Simple carbs are quickly metabolised, give a short energy boost followed by a blood sugar crash. Avoid.

What Gargamel said is pretty much on the money. Most diets recommend drinking water as it MAY act as a food substitue - ie stop making you feel hungry all the time.

Last year i did very similar, but kept it to three meals a day. Cereal or wholemeal toast for breakfast, Salad or rice or soup at lunch. 1 hour exercise after work. Protein dinner - meat, green veg, no carbs. I still went out for beers with the lads on a Friday or Saturday night.
I lost 18lb in 20 weeks, while gaining muscle at the same time, and became a lot fitter.
