Nissan's Sunderland workers were sent home on Tuesday until 15 December. There will then be three further days of non-production before the plant closes for Christmas.
The car company said it is monitoring sales through the economic crisis.
The 3,500 production staff are expected to remain on full pay and return to work as normal in January.
Then there are the other 3000 jobs indirectly affected in the component supply industry plus 500 casual workers on six month contracts.
Then the knock on effect of non-spending in the vicinity.

One young guy interviewed tonight gave up a permanent job a few months ago for a six month probationary period at Nissan. Excellent performance and timekeeping but got a letter today - finished at end of December.
No other job prospects in the area now. With everyone else scrambling for work in the area and no chance of selling his property and won't be able to afford mortgage so sees bankruptcy as his only option.

How the hell can they afford that................Ahhh.... Formula One.Honda usually aren't that affected by these downturns but they are this time it seems.

Still makes you wonder how they can afford to pay the factory workers for two weeks "holiday" right now
Wonder what (all!) the other foreign owned factories are doing?
These two are Japanese owned and they've had a downturn to deal with before so they have the experience. Don't think it was as bad then of course as it wasn't global, but it must have prompted them to look long and hard at the problem in good time.

Just means they can sell all the ones sitting n fields. It's cheaper than building more and more excess stock.Also bear in mind that parent company Renault's interference in Nissan's quality control has dragged a once superb brand down into the murky depths of French motoring. A dealer principle told me that Nissan's warranty claims have gone up 400% since the Renault take over.

My dad runs his own business and one of his main customers is Nissan in Sunderland. He has been working for them for over 10 years now.
In all that time he has never seen the flow line stopped or the engine test workshop in silence - this is how it was when he visited a few weeks ago. Cars are just not selling.
His other main client is Komatsu diggers based down the road in Birtley. At the start of November they had only 3 full days of work left until Christmas. They had not sold a single digger for around 3 months. Just to illustrate these are MAJOR employers in this area.
Hold on tight, 2009 is going to be an awful year

It's not all cloth cap and whippets and Nuclear Broon - but we could certainly be heading back to the bad old 30's where the only growth industry is cheap alcohol to dull the pain.

Just out of interest, what does your fathers company do for Nissan / Komatsu?
