Customs - Whats the limit in Madrid

Does anyone know how many cigs I can bring back from Madrid to the UK? Or a website showing the limits?

In theory as many as you want,in practice 2000 of them I believe is the latest guidelines

Its inside the EU therefore (I believe) the "accepted" limit is around 3000 for personal use. Best advise is to make sure you only bring one brand otherwise you will give HMRC reasonable cause to think they are not for personal use. I think they can pretty much take them off you at will anyway by saying they believe they are not for personal use & its up to you to prove otherwise.

Basically be discreet & sensible & you should be OK.

As Madrid is in the EU, as many as you like so long as the duty has been paid in the country you buy the cigs. Also you must be able to demonstrate to customs if they stop you, that they are for personal use. Customs use a guideline of 3000 fags for this purpose. Many more than that and you may have to explain how they are for you and not for resale to others.

One problem may be that if you wait until you get to the airport on the way back you may not be able to buy duty paid cigs there. So if you can, buy your cigs locally in the shops.

I've been working in Copenhagen recently and most of the cigs in the departure hall are only for sale for those travelling outwith the EU and have no duty included in the price. But I have found a shop further in the airport where I can buy a limited selection of duty paid cigs. Obvioulsy not as cheap but still 25% cheaper than at home. As I've been travelling regularly I've just been grabbing 400 each trip.
