My girlfriend and i are hopefully getting a place together next year some time. We are both saving for the deposit and it seems i,m the only one who actually wants to put down a large amount- she seems happy with whatever is needed to get her her 'own place' with no regard of the consequences if we end up in negative equity.

Anyway she has a streetka on finance- a decent little car which for someone of 22 to have is pretty good imo. She now wants another car and at what seems to me any cost. Want want want.!

Shes been offered 3300 for the ka even though she still owes 5500. This is being given to bmw so she can get an 07 mini which she will pay £285 per month for the next four years and then give back! yes thats right give back and receive nothing! So within 6 years if we include the ka by the time she gives the mini back she will have spent 19k ! Ok over 6 years that depreciation may not be bad when talking about proper cars and besides some people can afford that.

She just wont accept that she really should be keeping the ka for the rest of the term and that its a bad idea because shes 'paying for something thats worth less than she paid ) she doesnt quite understand cars or car finance it seems.

Sounds like a lot to me and it worries me that shes going to now be saddled with debt at a time when we should really be saving to move out. (Yes i have an evo and if work goes badly then it will go but otherwise i,m already saving nearly 3 times as much as her per mth and i dont earn 3 times as much! )

Anyway i dont know why i wrote this, but i do know that the country is in the state its in because people have to have the latest all the time and wont wait for it and worse still bmw finance is letting her have it even though £2200 shes paying is for the negative equity in the ka.

God help me.

I already did that which as you can imagine resulted in tears and me being the villan. I have a nice car(if you like chinese racers laugh ) so she deserves one too i,m told, even though i have 6 years on her, earn more and pay out less each month because i dont tick everything i fancy having.

I,m no financial wizz but if i were a little less careful we would/could be in serious trouble. Credit is still easy i,m afraid.

Those minis are nice, though, aren't they. I can see why any young woman would want to have one.

Post some pics and let us decide.

I don't think you should consider moving in together until some firm ground rules have been established re: finances.

My hubby had a large credit due to university life. We sat down and discussed how we would deal with this and planned how to control our finances in the future. It meant we both knew how we had to handle our money. It's not perfect but works most of the time.

You'll just have to sit her down and make her see sense. My missus was like this until recently, and still is to some extent. It took some time, but she now realises that you really don't need the top of the range everything when you have a £900 a month mortgage and a horse! It took some stern words and I was Mr Evil for a while, but now things are getting better and we're saving rather than spunking money on needless tat.

Too right my friend.
If i put my foot down any harder it will be through the floor. The locals didnt enjoy the row we had a couple of days ago when she told me. What fks me off more is her parents advocate it which is odd because they are uaually quite sensible. I assume her dad can take no more like myself and just has to agree.

I can see our house deposit consiting of 50% savings from me, 10% savings from her and 40% from selling my PAID for car. So yes i,ll be happy when myself the petrol head returns home to see an 07 rented car on the drive.
I wont miss the housing market for a second time so if it has to go it goes but still.

calm down now laugh

Don't move in with her mate - she's go a lot of learning to do yet.

By then they'll also be less pert and you might be thinking twice anyway.

Do an 'Income & Expenditure' exercise with her. She'll soon realise it's barmy. Failing that, swap the Ka for a £3300 Mini with intergalactic mileage and a shiny steering wheel.

Agreed, if she's like this now she will be a serious liability when you have a mortgage around your necks.

You need to put your foot down and make her see sense, how you do this only you know.

All i can do i think is leave her to it. She will learn that its not worth it when we are paying a mortgage and she has no money left as its paying for a car that isnt hers anyway. Luckily our (my ) deposit should be big enough to give us a smallish mortgage. So it wont be too bad.

I,m just pissed off with the must have now attitude. We all want better things thats just life but theres a line to draw. I want a gt3 rs but dont we all hey.
