supermarket bag packers collecting money

The step daughter did this at the weekend for her under 13's football team
The OH went along to help & after the 2 hr session she thought there was around £50-60 in the bucket..... not bad when you think there was 10 tills at it
When she joked with the footy coach "who's going to count all this!"
He said *insert name of large supermarket chain here* count it because they take there cut before we get it!!!

Now I'm a bit pissed off because I put £10 in the bucket thinking the footy team would benifit from it all


Is this common knowlege?

We had baton-twirling-type girls in leotards at our supermarket this weekend.

I got a poke in the ribs and a growly look from the OH when I left my donation.

whats the % they take for allowing them to earn money on their premises? I would have though 15%+vat.

If you're talking about the automated coin counter machines, yes they do take a sizeable %. Over 10% IIRC. I've used them a couple of times for the little'uns 2p and 5p collection. I should only take about an hour to manually count it, and it's probably going to take 30 mins or more to get to the supermarket, pile the money in... (ya can't dump a whole bucket at a time, only a couple of handfuls)..get your ticket, queue at customer services, then actually get the money.

I've stoppped going to my local Sainsburys on a Saturday because I'm fed up being guilt tripped into donating to some random youth group.

It got to the point where there was one on every till every Saturday.

No............ I'm talking about the kids............packing the bags..............at the tills.............with the buckets......that you throw money into!

News to me ,we have the army at our local Tesco collecting for either Headingly (sic) or the Help for hero's and I have been putting in a few quid on the way in and the way out ,I am going to ask them next time if this is the case.

Why bother going to a Supermarket during the day unless absolutely unavoidable?

I go late evening when it's quiet, no kids or coffin dodgers dithering short queues and no charity collections.

My bank branch has one that counts if for free and credits it to your account! Used it several times.

The employee on the OH's till said it really speeds things up & allows the member of staff that would be helping shoppers pack, stack shelfs or open other tills etc

The only trouble going late in the evening is that you can't get near half the stock because the aisles are full of cages/people restocking the shelves.

I work in the retail industry and can confidently say that there isn't a retailer out there who would take a 'cut' of charity donations, no matter how they're collected.

As others have said - maybe they're being lazy and using a 'Coinstar' machine to do the counting for them?
