Save Brighton Marina!!

Im not normally one to get on my soapbox about something but being a regular visitor to Brighton esp down the marina end I feel compelled to see if anyone else objects to the destruction of the marina.

"On 12 December the council will vote on Explore Living's plan to build 1,301 more flats in Brighton Marina in towers up to 28 storeys high. This, together with the Brunswick scheme already approved (rising to forty storeys) would cram the Marina with over 3,000 flats and lead to unprecedented pollution and congestion. It would be disastrous, not just for the Marina but for Brighton."

Essentially this is replacing the marina with tower blocks, many of which will ruin the cliff line being so large and cause a number of issues to the surrounding area.

If you live or visit Brighton regularly then please spend some time visiting the site (esp photo sections - where some of the planning companies photos are almost illegal and inapproriate!) and lodging you objection to this.

I think it's a fantastic idea to build these appartments!

Whilst it can be argued the city needs more flats like a hole in the head, at least it stops them bespoiling other bits of the coast. The current marina looks very old hat and is souless IMO, and also a wart on the coastline anyway so these things might just brighten it up and give it the atmosphere it really needs.

But as you say, Brighton doesnt need them. And it will ruin the coastline as it will block the view and be visible from miles around!

They could do more with the Marina, but it does just that, serve as a Marina and also provides restaurants, supermarket etc......

But since when has need been any consideration with building developments such as this? The land is there, the Marina owners want it, they've found a developer to take it on (well, that remains to be seen) and the council will more than likely approve it.

I'm afraid that website stinks of NIMBY-ism.

I've no doubt that the project will not get off the ground but that will be in no way the result of pressure from that website.

I've scarcely seen a worse case of NIMBYISM since those a*seholes near Headley Court last year.

Cards on the table; the marina is a nasty cold concrete dump that stinks of piss. How on earth anyone would think some new flats would ruin the post-modern brutalist image of the original buildings and the more modern nasty faux-nautical bar area is hard to concieve. It is, as Prince Charles had it, a carbunkle on the coastline.

I'd ask you what was on that coastline before they built the marina? That's right; nothing! If you were really interested in the environment then you'd bulldozer the whole ghastly edifice into the sea to creat a manmade reef for the fish and seabird life.

Given the current situation with city centre flats and trendy crash pads, is it really wise to throw up yet more in Brighton? I am sure the company behind this is in it for the long haul, but maybe their investments might be spent elsewhere? Seems rather excessive to me - but I don't live in Brighton and I have no idea how bad / good prices are there..

I see your point regarding the site, not the best way to get people onside.

But my views remain the same. I would rather see it modernised than just flats.......

Totally agree.

Can't stand the place personally, as you say nasty damp concrete. The only sorry thing is that this development won't get built as everything that concerns the marina has the reverse Midas touch, everything they touch turns to st.

Surely that's what they want to do?

They want to modernise part of the piss stinking area into a development of modern flats that will possibly block the views of the people who run that website who may just happen to have bought the overpriced units originally built there. Ahhhh, I think I see their problem with it now......

But the coastline is already runied. Theres a chuffing town there, with toilets that smell and shops and old people that smell and a piss poor excuse for a beach with a pier. You're several hundered years too late to save the coastline.

More bolleaux grande reserve from skid row on sea.

Don't agree with the development but neither am I fond of the Marina which as others have said is a concrete sthole.

Best we can hope for here is that the developers go bust leaving the place half finished.
