Child birth not stressfull for the Dad.......pftt yeah ok
Discussion
Having a few probs sleeping right now so thought i'd have a catchup on here and right my little story down.
My wife went into induced labour on wednesday they broke her waters as she was having a few problems with low platelets in her blood and they wanted to get the nipper out. She was 1 week from full term.
This is our 3rd child and the first 2 were absolutely great births no dramas at all. This one though was a little different.
The Mrs gets put on a drip to initiate contractions, the thing is having the thing in her hand meant she couldn't push lying on her back as she couldn't grab anything. She has delivered our other 2 on her back and thought this would be the same but this time she had to kneel on the bed leant over the head board. Shes doing all the good stuff, i'm rubbing her back doing my fatherly duty waiting for everything to happen so i can get out ring everyone.
Baby starts to show and with a couple more pushes he's out and the midwife (who i think must have been a wicket keeper as well) executes a perfect catch, next thing about 2 litres of fluid follow the baby out at the split second my 2 second old son takes his first breath. He inhales most of the water and then silence..............
As anyone who has had kids will know that cry is a great sound. Well he wasn't crying and he wasn't going pink, midwife tries to sort him and then i started to see this cheery bubbly woman suddenly look very serious. In a flash the chord was cut and he was chucked onto the resus table, she hits the alarm and buzzers are going lights flashing outside.......my son is still blue and silent.
I can hear suction as she frantically tries to clear some water then hissing as oxygen flows around his face, The door bursts open 3 midwifes run in and a paediatrician (sp?) ....2 minutes gone he's still blue and quiet then theres a gurgle. The delivery midwife then grabs him and they all bolt to the door where he is rushed to "special baby care unit" we are both distraught.
Next my wife goes pale. In all the panic no-one has realised my wife is hemorrhaging on the bed, shes bleeding and she has a blood platelet count of less than 80ppm (the average person has 400ppm) so her body can't stop it. I hit the emergency button more midwifes come in and stick some hormone drip on her pumping it in as fast as the machine will allow, they fire injections into her legs and hope that works. The surgeons are called in, the consultant is called in from his home.
Gradually the bleeding slows but she has lost a lot of blood and just wants to sleep. She looks at me, i have to look as strong as possible for her even though all i can think is that i came in with a wife and un-born baby and i'm going to leave with neither.
3 hours later the bleeding is under control. I go outside to ring family which is when it hit me and i just fell against the wall in shear exhaustion and emotion. I ring my mum and try and tell her but only manage a couple of words but she gets the picture....shes a Dr and very calming, she says she will inform rest of family for me. I go back up to the wife and she looks better. The midwifes say i can go and see me son....i had totally forgotten i had a Son out of all this and he was alive!
I go into Special care unit where he has stablised and now pink!
I truelly thank all the midwifes and staff at he hospital who were all so proffesional.
He now has his tubes off, drip disconnected and is breathing on his own.

Blimey - that puts things in perspective somewhat!
Glad all looks okay in the end.
And congratulations on a fine looking kid!
The last time my missus dropped a sprog, I told the midwives that whatever they earn it ain't enough.
Sadly, your story will never hit the headlines. Should one of the midwives have messed up it most certainly would have. The world is a sick place at times.

Phew, I felt a bit err.."funny" whilst reading that until I got to the point where everbody was fine!
Congratulations, glad to hear all is well!
I remember when my daughter was born, I was doing really well until the midwife said "hmm, she's tearing slightly" produced what looked like a pair of pruning shears and proceeded to snip the whole of way down from the missus' garden gates down to the back door!(is it called the perineum for a woman too?)Blood everywhere and my daughter's head emerging from what looked like a smashed summer fruits pie! Cue much wobbly knees, cold sweat and stars in front of my eyes. Wouldn't have missed it for the world though!

Hmmm, why not William then? You've got six weeks to change your mind so don't rush into anything. He's Ellis after William Webb Ellis the founder of Rugby (i'm a bit Rugby mad!) and Morgan well i'm sure i need not explain that one.......favourite rum

Congrats, a harrowing story though.
Although you mention the profesionalism of the staff etc, and of course they very much saved the day, I can tell you that we had the choice of three hospitals and having visited picked the one with the best attitude to the delivery. They warned us not to panic at the actual moment of birth as this is totally normal for the hospital, but I still forgot and got panicked when at the final moments of the delivery, the doctor hit a buton and a full resuss team and equipment came legging it in, ready to pounce on baby should he she need it!
As soon as our little one popped out and was al ok, the team legg it out and are on standby for the next one. Although it surprised me, they had warned me it would happen and it means they are all there just in case and it is avery reassuring. The thought of having something go wrong and then them summoning help would concern me if then there was a problem.
Hope your wife and baby are ok to go home soon.

And people wonder why home births aren't a great idea!
Congratulations to you both.
Don't worry about your wife having a low platelet count, 80 is lowish but I survived having counts of 5 earlier this year. 80 was seen as top banana!
I dont want to seem like Im thread jacking here, but do you siffer from ITP?Congratulations to you both.

Only asking as my wife has a very low platelet count and was diagnosed with ITP a few years ago, apparently its a very rare condition, but throws up all sorts of problems due to the blood not clotting properly.
