Its getting to that time of the year when I can think about changing my mobile handset. I have been looking at a couple of choices and I think I have narrowed down the selection. Firstly I currently use an original iPhone and I have been happy with it, but now my requirements have changed, I need a phone which I can receive my email on, so its need to be compatible with Exchange server. I need to be able to view internet on it. It needs to have a half decent camera and it needs to either have expandable memory or a minimum of 8GB. Oh also preferably a handset on orange!
I have been looking at the following:
HTC Touch HD – like the look of this but it’s a new handset so not been able to have a play with it or get any feedback on it
HTC Touch Diamond - Screen is small so internet browsing could be awkward.
Samsung Omnia – Sounds like a good spec, but what is it actually like?
Nokia N96 – Does this have the same problems as the N95? Also screen is small so internet browsing could be awkward.
Sony Ericsson Experia – Is this available on orange?
Any advice on any of the above or any others I may not have thought about?

The only one I have had experience with is the Samsung Omnia - and I didn't buy one because it was too awkward to use - texting was very difficult without using the stylus and the stylus that it comes with is only clip-on rather than having a storage hole in the phone.

Agreed. I think mine is brilliant The Blackberry's are untouchable for email still and thats why my next phone will be a Blackberry unless either a version of the iphone or a phone on the Android platform can compete with the Blackberry's.
However, the Storm's 3.2mb camera is fairly good but the Bold's camera is no better than the rubbish one on the iphone.
I know a few have suggested the Blackberry but i just dont get on with them hence they have not been shortlisted. I think one of the reasons i dont like the blackberry is because they look overly fussy by having a qwerty keyboard. I like the smoother looks of the touch screen phones.
I never realised the stylus on the omnia could not be clipped onto the phone, that is annoying.
The more i read about the HTC Touch HD the more i am drawn to it....

I have an HTC Touch Diamond cloney thing from T-mobile. Do not get this. The Touch diamond and MDA Compact IV (mine) were buggy on shipping. The touch has been fixed, mostly, by a ROM upgrade, but it probably wont surprise you to learn that T-Mobile have not been able to supply said patch for the C.IV. (wasters)
As far as size is concerned, I agree its really a bit too small for good browsing, although the Opera version supplied is reasonably good. You can relatively easily browse PH for instance.
Using the phone as a GPS is quite cool and I use it all the time (no sense of direction at all). The C. IV comes with Co pilot (trial), but the Touch D does not, although you can use Google maps with the GPS which is useful.
The touch flow interface which is also installed on the HD, is pretty, but it takes some time to master using it with your fingers. Run over the edge and you close the application or open up something else...grrr. I generally get cross with it and resort to stylus. Often the "buttons" are too small to operate without the stylus (FM Radio on/off, window close to name but 2 really irritating ones), but these may be hang -overs from WM6.1.
The cameral is 3.2 MP, but there is no flash and the shutter speed is ridiculously slow so there is no chance of "catching the moment"
Another really annoying thing is the head set. It uses a mini-USB and not a jack so you can’t get a set of good headphones. You can buy an adaptor (a couple of quid from Amazon) but then you don’t get the hands free function.......
The most annoying bug of all is that as soon as you pick up a call, the screen goes blank and won’t come back on until you have pushed the on switch. You then get presented with an option screen and not the key pad, so you can’t, for example. press 7 to delete a phone message without hitting the on key, pressing the stupidly tiny button to return to the key pad and then .......oh dear it gone.
Whilst I salute HTC for cramming all that technology into such a small space, I really can't recommend it. Especially in the T-mobile guise. I gather Vodaphone and Orange give enough of a toss about their customers to have actually supplied a fix, T-Mobile can't be arsed.
Sorry for the extended rant, but I hope it at least leaves you sufficiently informed to ask the salesman if the bugs have been fixed!

That's very interesting thanks for that. Its great to hear what a phone is really like to live with from people who are using it as supposed to a sales person who used it for 10 minsGorgeous screen - quite slim

Touch Diamond Pro has a full sized keyboard so might be better for emails.
E71 is superb phone and the X1 seems to be getting great reviews. From what I hear, X1 and E71 have very low failure rates, although the X1 is still pretty new so too early to be sure.
HTC do tend to eat their batteries but as I understand it, the latest firmware has ironed out many of the issues. Blackberries are fine. I dont like the interface much but thats a personal thing.
The X1 and E71 are the ones I would go for but try them and see if you like the feel of the phones.

Blackberries don't talk to exchange - they talk to BES server so unless you happen to have one of these available I wouldn't bother as the forwarding software to use the phone provider's BES server is a bit iffy. Nokia's web browser isn't that bad but exchange support is naff. I'd either look wholly at windows mobile or stick with the iPhone.

Are you saying all of the providers BES servers are rubbish? If you are, thats complete nonsense.I have been using Blackberrys for years on the phone companies BES servers and it takes two seconds to set-up and I have never heard of any issue other than people sometimes making mistakes in the initial set-up.
No phone out there can match the Blackberry for email and that especially includes the iphone which can really can't cut it in terms of email functionality against the blackberry.
I'm going to shortly get a bold, however given the poster has said that a good camera is required this would rule out the bold as it's camera is no better than the rubbish camera on the Iphone. The only blackberry that would fit the bill for the poster is the Storm.

The wifi on blackberry, nokia S60 and winmobile works fine, All of them have hundreds of 3rd party apps and will not be automatically uninstalled if the phone company or the handset manufacturer doesn't like it for some pretentious reason.Also, everyone else can run more than one application at one time, and can receive instant messages without having to have the application permanently open in the foreground. Everyone else also has working today screens without having to hack the device to get one. Everyone else also natively supports you plugging your laptop into it or using bluetooth dialup to get internet on that. This is why I do not have an iPhone. If I wanted the browser and the apps I'd get an ipod touch and use wifi to get internet shared out on my N95.

i just installed a cooked ROM from XDA Developers, bonus being i could get rid of the T Mobile white and pink colour scheme. I got the Diamond as soon as it came out, so shipped with the buggy ROM, but the 1.93 update irons em out. If needs be i can reset to factory ROM for warrenty issues

i dont find it a problem. the D pad acts as a secondary zoom function - double tap the screen to zoom in and if you need it any larger or smaller then rub the d pad to alter the zoom

i didnt get co pilot with mine, but i installed Tom Tom 7 on it instead

i havent had this problem - yes i use the stylus a fair bit, but i've had WM phones for a long time, so its more habit than need. but if if out and about i can use the phone with just fingers. the window close thing - you can just press with your finger, same with the FM radio close - because it knows theres nothing in that area of the screen other than the close button (well its more a minimise button - the programes still run in the background)

[b]the screen off on a phone call isnt a bug, its built in - its to stop you pressing keys on the screen with your face. It can be turned off either with a tweek or via the registry, and set it to either display the call status window, or the keypad.
Also if you answer the call with the phone flat on the table, then raise it to your ear - the screen wont turn off.
TBH i havent had a problem, i like the screen off bit, and it isnt a problem to press the power key to turn the screen on and press the keypad button, especially if you know your going to be needing the keypad - say calling your voice mail.
Remember the other thing is if you remove the stylus while on a call, it turns on the screen, and opens the notes function so you can hand write any notes you need.[/b]

and it has 4Gb internal memory.the touch pro has better battery life (tho there is an offical larger battery with a new back cover available for the diamond which should help the battery life) has the 4Gb memory and a MicroSD slot.
