Walked ~5 miles yesterday, all on the flat at a slow pace, and shortly afterwards got a bad pain in my hip / top of thigh, slept badly as a result and today it still hurts to walk.

I do ~40 mins bike/cross trainer 2 or 3 times a week and in the recent past have cycled 20-30 miles in a day with no problems.

So why does this only affect when walking? What can I do to prevent in future?

At the risk of sounding stupid, walk more?

The muscles used will be completely different on a stationary bike or cross trainer to those used actually walking across uneven terrain and having to keep your balance, compensate for slippery surfaces etc.

I guess..I do walk a reasonable amount each day, didn't expect it to be so much more painful when I walk that little bit further!

Cyclins is non impact.

I also agree with doing more walking as I expoerienced the same pains as you after taking a walk the other day.

I'm also getting this. Was exercising a lot until financial constraints meant cancelling the gym. I tried one or two runs on the road, but ended up in real discomfort with hip pain at night. I can only sleep on my back.
Have now stopped running as well. Fit with hip pain of fat without?? unenviable choice.
