Just bought as flat, the electricity was disconnected in June. EDF have stated they are not able to reconnect unless i get a certificate to state the electricity is safe.

has anyone heard of this, or know if it is true?

I dont want to spend £100 on something that is not a legal requirement.

Cheers

how old is the flat and are you intending to do any work to it?

You'll only pay about £150 for a full electrical inspection & at least you know if there are any faults that need sorting. Over 20 years you don't know who's messed with it. Not worth messing with something that could potentially kill you.

Bloody hell, you'd think EDF might have someone who knows about electricity and could take a look when they come to switch it on!

ETA: Or try another supplier?

Have you already exchanged contracts or completed? Was there something written into your contract about the services being left in a 'safe and servicable situation'?

May be worth a phone call to the brief in the morning.

And yes, if the supplier are in any doubt, they can and will insist on a check.

Oh dear god please tell me they aren't bringing this one back again...

Many moons ago, the regional electricity co's (NEEB / MANWEB SWEB etc) would not connect without a test certificate. This changed when someone had the bright idea (a very good one IMHO) of installing an Isolator after the meter. Thus the Electricity Co's responsibility ended at the isolator and anything on the Consumer's side was not their problem.

You could always try another provider but if none of them play ball you'll have to bite the bullet and pay for an Inspection from someone NAPIT/NICEIC (etc) registered. It shouldn't be hugely expensive. Flats do not take a huge amount of time to test / inspect but the Electrician will not be able to fully complete the certificate until the power is on.

It shouldn't be an issue (it never used to be) but i pointed it out so the OP wouldn't be surprised if he ends up on a merry-go-round biggrin

appreciate the help chaps, Monkey, that makes sense to me, I will ask EDF tomorrow what their thoughts are.

Apparently no one else can turn the power on as EDF disconnected it for non payment. Although the property has changed hands they said only they can resupply, and would stop another provider taking the account.

I accept in the grand scheme £150 isnt a great deal, but i have had environmental searched that said the flat may or may not be insulated, chancel searches to say their isnt a local church i am responsible for, and a ream of paperwork that achieved nothing except providing one of Gordon's chums a job.

EDF..bloody French rolleyes . We have a unique way of dealing with them around here wink

Give Consumer Direct a buzz on 08454 04 05 06. Explain the situation and see what they say. IMHO the disconnection for non-payment is not your problem.

Agree with that, When a house is sold isnt there a check done on all the services? Of course if it had been cut off due to being empty for a while i guess not.

You owe EDF no money, how can they stop another supplier from connecting?

You may use another supplier connecting but it will still be EDF who turn up and connect for that supplier if your are in the Anglia, London or the South East as they look after the network.

How have they disconnected it? Pulled a fuse? Pulled a wire? Surely it is simple job to just reconnect? They would have had to have left it in a safe condition.

Reconnect it yourself and then you'll have free electricity!

I would imagine they have pulled the main fuse.

Not really at a stage in life where i want to be caught stealing leccy, 20 yrs ago i would have jumped at the opportunity!

You are correc tthough, the house was left in a safe state. The previous owner had almost completed his interior revamp when it was repo'd. Kinda feel sorry for him.
