No not a discussion about fatties

Was wondering the other day (weirdly after watching topgear and hearing James May is a confirmed bachelor) whether it is possible to be happy and single for your entire life, or are humans made up in such a way that we need/have to have a 'significant' other to acquire fulfilment/happiness, or as long as you fill your life with whatever makes you happy you can live blissfully alone for your entire life?

I personally don't think you can be complete without a partner.

Since the abrupt death of my long-term partner (aged 29) I have enjoyed a true traditional Gentlemans' role as an elligible bachelor.

I have many female friends and am not tied to one particular partner and would find it strange to devote myself to one when I am currently devoting myself to many biggrin

I think we're absolutely not 'designed' to have life-long monogamous relationships; they're just a social convention.

I love this. Bit O/T am I'm sure May is not necessarily a homosexualist but this is such a tabloid codeword for being a gaylord. Peter Mandelson is one, so is Gordon Brown but he prefers to lie and deceive because he is ashamed.....

Doesn't that sound a bit like codependency?

100% true - and there in is the challenge within any marriage.

+ Anyone that believes they need 'another half' to complete them is obviously a few sandwiches short in the first place... or weak.

Sure its nice and comfortable to have another half... but as long as youve got friends and a few partners along the way - Life is bliss biggrin

You can call it whatever you want.

My wife and I may not say anything for hours to each but we know we are there. If I go out with friends, I miss her like mad. We have a child due in 3 months and are both thrilled at the thought of growing old together with our children.

To get back to the original question, yes I think it is possible but you do have to be the sort of person entirely comfortable in your own company.

Were I to become single again I don't think I would ever bother to live with someone else again. I would want to have occasional "companionship" but nothing serious.

I would however require the company of friends as I really wouldn't want to be a complete loner.
