In line with another thread on here I do beleive it is time to bring back national service. Not only will we get a lot of the scrotes of the street it will teach them a thing or two about life. They may even be able to give something back to the comunity or is that asking too much? shoot

I learned how to field strip an SA80 and GPMG in cadets.

My Grandad (ex Royal Engineers) taught me how to iron a shirt.

My parents brought me up properly.

Would I be exempt?

No, you are an example and have a head start.

I was all for NS when i was at school and still agree in principal, but it does need to be something that is tailored to the individual's skill set.

Why dilute one of our great institutions with the scum of society?

But to be fair, you only pitched up so you could be amongst men in uniform.

Far too much to ask.

But we would have a generation of neat and tidy blanket folders.

yes

However, it could be separate to the main body of the military. Just have the military let them use it's assault course and other stuff.

I think the main purpose of such a sheme would be for it to identifiy what skills each individual possess and concentrate on making them better at it. That way they can put those skills to use to help society, themselves and the tax payer.

Why not? The army's always been made up of the dregs of society acting as cannon fodder controlled by officers made up of toffs who were otherwise unfit for real jobs.

It's been a rather good way of keeping both undesirable social groups out of our hair and off harassing bothersome foreigners in some inhospitable part of the world instead of making trouble at home.

National Service does have to mean they join the armed services. It just needs to be something that is run by the armed services biggrin

Why? From age 5 to 65 you'll be either working or in full-time education, if you're lucky. Why not spend a year living it up?

Sadly not. I did want to join the forces when I was younger but went into a more profitable line of work. I do think though that we could make NS something to be proud of. It doesnt need to be forces realted for everyone, there must be a choice.

Jealousy, I assume.

Kids with their money or folks money going off for a year and having fun before settling down into a lifetime of work. I don't begrudge them.

It's the ones who stay behind and throw stones at fireengines etc that I think we should be focussing our attention on.

I did 11 months, there are good and bad sides to NS.
Good is you have a large defence army, young men get a lesson in/for life, you make good friends.
Bad points are all the powertrippy stheads who do not know one single thing about leadership, imagine a chav in a leading position and having to take orders from him.
