Following on from this thread I'm after Hotel recommendations or probably more useful basic area recommendations on where to stay in Barcelona.
Traveling on a modest budget so not a lot of point saying stay at the Hilton but if the Hilton is in a great location and there's a little B&B next door then thumbup
Just been browsing the travel agents bumf and had to laugh at one hotel being sold on being 'right next to the red light district' now I can see that this might be a plus for some but I don't the better half is going to be to chuffed if I book that one, so where's good, and where's seedy?
Want to be pretty central to a bit of nightlife but not the £50 an hour nightlife. wink

Was very nice when I was there a couple of years ago. I believe it's changed hands so I don't know if it's the same but it's ideally located for the beach and the town.

I've used the Hotel Gran Ducat a few times for football trips - hotel is ok, clean, quite modern and cheap. The location is really fantastic, yards from the Place de Catalunya.

Keep your hands and your wallet in your pockets at all times, I have been five times for work and every, and I mean every time one of our party has been thieved from. Street scum nicking anything of value while in restaurants, bus etc.

I am a little bitter, my Blackberry went, I gave chase after the pikey and when he realised couldnt lose me he threw it to the ground smashing it hoping to delay me. Lost all my info of two months travelling as well as lovely pictures etc.

Rant over, have a nice time, but be bloody careful.

I would recommend an apartment. Loads of choice and they are pretty reasonable price wise.

Gothic quarter is very nice with little squares, cafes and bars. Very central as well though the underground is excellent.

Good advice.

When I was last there in 2001, I had a gypsy try and take a camera out of my hand in the middle of the day (in the busy main drag, what ever the name of it is). I was so pissed off, I grabbed him and threw him down the road (he was a lot smaller than me). Luckily his gypsy mates that were with him didn't jump me, else I would have been done for.
And I got pick pocketed one night - dodgy spanish guy walked up to me all matey/drunk while I was on the mobile to my girlfriend outside a club (I was drunk too), hugged me (I was shocked, but then this is Europe), so he could check my pockets for money (didn't stick around long enough for it to be anything else!!!) found I had only a few coins left, and quickly walked off.

Raceboy, when i went i stayed in one of the Ibis hotel, nice and cheap, didnt matter it was a 5min tube ride from centre as tube are reaaly good, and cheap. I think in Barca it really doesnt matter where you stay.

Raceboy,

You could try Hostal Goya, it is on Pau Claris, just off Placa Catalunya. In spite of it being called a hostal, it does have a separate 'wing' which is more like an apartment and is quiet because the rooms do not overlook main roads. Well located for walking to / from Barri Gothic and transport options are good from there.

Worth calling them if you're interested in making a booking and confirming into which part of the hostal you're being booked.

this place is the dogs wotsits with a sprinkle of cats wiskas. Still a bit "boutique" but awesome locale. I went for a dinner B&B 2 night package and when you added up all the inclusions it actually worked out pretty well (nice hotels in BCN aint exactly cheap)

enjoy

We stayed here:

Nice hotel, right next door to the Sants Station, which is a 20 minute journey from Barcelona Airport so very convenient. We upgraded to the 'executive' class room and had a fantastic view over the city.

You probably want to be within walking distance of Rambalas, but not actually in amongst it!

Stayed in the Havana Hotel thats not bad, cant remember how much but would have been around your budget.

Loads of good place, depends on what area you want to stay.

Like most others have said, keep a close eye on your pockets especially in the Ramblas it's a feckin nightmare leave anything worth nicking back in the room if you can!

BUT, great city and you'll have a cracking time.

The only one I have stayed in twice is Barcelo Sants. Both times on a stag do, but don't let that put you off. It is a standard business / conference hotel located directly above the main train station only 4 or 5 stops from the airport.

Enjoy your trip.

Edited to add

try booking with www.booking.com always seem to have good prices and don't require immediate payment like lastminute or others. Also check reviews of hotels with www.tripadvisor.co.uk
