I have a friend (unlikely I realise but yes, it is true) who is setting up a small business involving text to win sms competition lines. Suffice it to say I can't reveal much information about the particular area but it isn't an "adult" service and it's not one of these rip-off competition lines you see advertised in the back pages of the tabloid press offering unrealistic prizes.

He asked me if I knew anything about the hosting of such domains for recieving sms texts as he has been quoted quite a high figure by BT for the hosting of this service. Does anyone here have any knowledge of this particular sector or know of any reputable company that hosts such a service?

Har har.

Should have mentioned, without giving too much away, that the whole idea is an event based thing.

Can't help exactly but....

I friend of mine used to work for http://www.flytxt.com they might have something that your friend needs. No idea on costs (i.e. if they are competitive)

I looked into this a while ago and did income versus cost to see if it was profitable. IMO you'd need excellent advertising to get it to the poeple you know do this sort of thing.

in terms of cost, there are a few companies that will do all the hosting for you. I found them on the net by searching in google and then spoke to a couple of the guys there. I'd suggest doing the same.

I remember thinking the whole thing was a micky take - basically, from a 50p text, you'd get somehting like 8p. Form a £1 text, you'd get somehting like 35p. I cant remeber exactly, but I do remember thinking I'd be doing most of the hard work, taking all the risks, and basically not getting the proportionate return.

I think unless you have a unique selling point there is too much competition. He is a few years behind.
