Why is it every sodding documentary on Discovery uses kilometers for measurements? They use English voice overs and yet insist on using kilometers or other such measurements for speed/distance. Why? WHY? I cant understand them I dare say most people watching cant understand them.

Yes I know how to convert but I have no actual visual apreciation of how far or fast a kilometer is

Because we are a metric country and metric measurements are taught in schools. The MPH, mile signs and the rest are only used still to help the elderly and because of the expense in changing all of them.

So officially we no longer use MPH or Miles? I must have missed that official announcment, when do we start driving on the right?

imperial is an outdated method of measurement

the sooner the UK converts to metric the better

But the science community SI units are used.

So a fact based program on discovery would use SI units.

Agreed. This was done in Ireland and it works very well.

Do you think they don't speak English in other countries?

No, I didn't say that. We still use Imperial measurements alongside metric because of pandering for those that can't be bothered to learn metric. Children are not taught how many yards in a mile or inches in a foot. They are taught centimetres, metres and kilometres, just as they are for weight and volume measurements.

The only countries in the entire world not to have gone metric are Myanmar, Liberia and the United States, oh and your house it seems.

As for an announcement, we introduced metric measurements in he 1970s, perhaps you weren't born then to hear about it, or you're too old to remember. smile

officially? No, so if they dont why do we have to have their stupid units that no one can actually visualise properly?

I'm not

once the majority of the population of pre-decimalisation pass away the UK will convert to metric

as much as I'd like the UK to change to driving on the right (better choice of models and les compromised designs) it's unlikely to happen

Driving on the right would mean cheaper cars and more choice, think of all the LHD cars that you can't get in RHD you could drive in the UK without needing a co-pilot to see if it's clear to overtake or look like a cheapskate. wink

I am sure Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, pakistan and hundereds of other countries would disagree.
