Most people turning 60 would be looking at slowly winding down and retiring.

Prince Charles is still waiting patiently for his time to come even though 60 has/is about to arrive.

Would it make sense to boot them out earlier to allow a younger more in touch monarch to step up to the plate?

I think that being a member of the roay family is like a luxury life sentence. Wouldn't want to have that job for all the tea in china

The theory is good, but you're assuming that Prince Charles is 'more in touch' than his mother. Which almost certainly isn't the case.

I think Charles should get his turn, however I do think William will be a great King.

Good point. I guess his plants could vouch for that as well.

Probably.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

The trouble is that people want the royal family to reflect the passions and issues of NOW - short wave, if you like.

In fact their role is to provide long frequency continuity.

This, in the case of Prince Charles, is evidenced by things like the Princes Trust and his advocacy of organic farming, both of which he put forward a long time before they were fashionable.

I think William may make a good King, but he will be a better one if he is 40+ when it happens, and, if necessary, Charles would make a fine one in the meantime.

I guess it’s an inevitability but; the monarch being younger than me is a step further than acknowledging that most policemen are.

'The King of England'. It sounds like something out of an old movie, strange that we live in times where we still have kings and queens and knights and all.

I just read ken Follets 'World Without End', so the whole monarchy and church thing looks a little primitive and crude now.

Euch! Can't think of anything worse that having a Royal Family that was "in touch". They are supposed to be providing continuity going back to Alfred the Great, not "mashing one up" on fking radio one for God's sake. What ever next?

One would hope that, in a constitutional monarchy, the monarch represents the people and should therefore endeavour to protect them from the excesses of government, who after all, are only there to represent themselves. This is a reversal of their respective, historical roles.

In this sense, I am beginning to believe that Her Majesty has of late, lost the plot.

When HRH Prince Charles says things I agree with more often than the Prime Minister you know that the world is seriously fked up.

I don't wish Her Maj any ill at all but I think Charles will be a fine King even if his reign is likely to be a short one.

I will also say that in the dark days to come a Coronation or two and a Royal Wedding will probably do the country a great deal of good...

Been thinking the same for a while now. Obviously we don't know what has gone on behind the scenes but there does need to be some sort of reality check on the 'we're elected so we can do what we like' thinking which has become overpowering. An election every 4-5 years should properly allow the elected government to fulfil its manifesto but not to the long term detriment of the country.

I do think the Queen has gone past her Retirement Date. It looks as if we are going to have one elderly monarch followed by another.

ETA It seems the (Wife's) Sunday Express has the same idea. Saying HM will retire when Charles hits 65 and she'll be 87. We'll see....

Well..let's say the Queen lives as long as her mother...(say another 20 years)...she might outlive her son, leaving a 45yr old or so William to rule the land and walk the corgis.
