Just went into the loft to run a new power cable, and heard a rustling sound that didn't belong, then saw a Robin sized bird, but slightly slimmer fly in front of me.

I suspect it's got in and can't find its way out, so how do I save the poor thing before it starts decomposing and attracting even more mice/rats/squirrels/etc than we've already got an on-going battle with?

Serious and comedy suggestions welcome...

Don't handle it, it will probably die of fright. As has been said above, use a large sheet/empty duvet cover but nothing as heavy as a large towel as you may injure it. Once it's covered, gather the sheet up gently, take it outside and slowly release it. Move away from the bird so you don't scare it too much.

Once it's outside, take a good look in the loft for others/nest.

Find an animal-loving wildlife forum (not the Brazilian/Romanian sort) and openly state that you have a small song bird in your loft and you're wondering how to kill it.

No doubt some micra-driving, god-bothering, nature obsessed 50 something Nigel will volunteer to sort it for you. -You just let him in, open a beer and download another bag of crisps.

Sorted.

I'm not sure a decomposing bird would attract mice and squirrels as I'm not sure they go in for that type of thing. Maybe you're thinking of flies.
