Does anyone know anything about these places?

Applying for "proper" university - foundation year this year - for Sept. 09 entry and don't really know that much about these places but they are my choices! Due to course and how good the course and uni looks!

Other is Nottingham which I know and probably won't move out of Derbyshire for.

Leicester and Sheffield would see a house move but not all that far, I like some of the South Leicestershire area and no doubt there are some nice places in Sheffield both not too expensive Any knowledge of the area shops, bars etc. would be great though.

Newcastle and Surrey would see me moving far away. What are the places and areas like? Is there plenty to do, nice shops and bars, nice places to live, good driving roads etc.

1st year not sure whether I'm going to live in halls or not and save some money lol, depends on issues of parking (some you have to pay and only a few spaces) and what the halls are like!

Depending on halls and for second year I'm probably looking at living about 5-10 miles out of the city itself, still cheap for nights out - taxis / buses back (lets get practical here lol) but just out of the actual centre of things.

Would like -
Decent bars
Good shops
Good driving roads
While being a Derbyshire girl I have low standards of what good bars and shops are, I know a good road when I see one!

Any help / recommendations much appreciated!

Out of those I'd pick Sheffield as a place to live.

Unless you like curry, then go to Leicester.

Don't come to Newcastle wink

And if you do, don't move in near me! Bloody students! wink

On a serious note I love Newcastle and loads of students seem to as well!

Main student rental areas are Jesmond and Heaton. There are loads of bars / shops and cinema's / theatres in town and the 'burbs!

I've lived in Leicester, and work in Sheffield now. Another vote for Sheffield. Lots of nightlife and lots of Students.

There are some nice villages in Leicestershire and some have half decent transport links to the city. Not sure what it's like for a student though. Would have thought Surrey would be very expensive, and can't comment on Newcastle, though would have thought the night life there would be good too.

Newcastle:

Driving - Loads of good roads not a huge distance away, the Pennines, Northumberland and North Yorkshire all in driving distance.
Shopping - decent high street but you've also got the Metrocentre only 10 mins drive from Newcastle city centre.
Drinking - Bigg Market/Quayside/Jesmond - loads of places, also award winning nightlife, plenty of clubs. Plenty of student specials around the uni's but also loads of general 2-for-1 offers etc in the main places.

I just graduated from Sheffield in July, and it was a great place to go to Uni. I also lived in Surrey for about 6 years, and that is also a lovely place to live. However, I would definitely recommend Sheffield. I would also recommend living in halls in your first year. Is a great way to meet loads of people, and make great friends. Also, they have just finished, or are finishing, building brand new halls. The halls I lived in were knocked down the summer after my first year, and new ones were built over it. They look very nice. The uni too, is very good and reputable. I looked around Leicester when uni hunting, and preferred Sheffield. It is a city, so has plenty of everything you need, but doesn't feel too big.

As for the other stuff you wanted. There are plenty of decent bars and clubs. Maybe not as many as there are in Newcastle, but plenty enough. There are loads of shops in the city centre, and Meadowhall is just a tram ride, or a 10 minute drive, by the M1. Good roads are a plenty! Just out of the city, just passed where most of the halls are, is the peak district. Loads of wonderful roads in that direction. Snake Pass winds its way all the way over to Manchester. That is a really nice drive.

That is my experience/advice/recommendation. Hope it is useful. Good luck.

oh - and the student areas in Guildford are all terraced houses etc with no garages and on street parking - most of which is residents only or limited time...

It's also not the greatest bit of Guildford but it is fairly close to the station and the town.

I very much enjoyed my time there (as a post grad student) and would go back to live there. Rent is dear though mind.

Thanks all so far smile

I can make a trip to Sheffield and Leicester no problem so will go, have a look round and a good drive round the areas etc.

Newcastle and Surrey are a bit further away so I may wait until an Open Day (provided I get offers) kill two birds and all that!

Good on you wink Plenty sponge of parents to only piss hard earned ££ up the wall! I've always said if they want to go they will fund it-more incentive that way? I know too many people who went to Uni only to end up in jobs that they could have done straight from school.

Thanks what is parking like at the uni? Very big part for me!

When you say not the greatest bit of Guildford, is it safe? I don't want to be dealing with break ins full stop both home and car! Therefore I am willing to pay a little more than the norm to live in a better area, I'm not city savvy so to speak so would rather be out of all that (living wise that is)

How dear are we talking?

LOL I know what you mean.

Well I'll be 21 next year yikes and am going to do Financial Mathematics. Not really going for the student experience but that should be a nice part of it, I'm going to study and get a good degree.

Whether or not the job comes through at the end of uni, it is still a great experience, and one I am definitely glad I chose to do. If parents choose to spend their money on their child's education, that isn't a bad thing. Before I get verbally stoned, I had to get a loan for uni, and worked while I was there to keep me going, so was not one of the "spongers". Also, fortunately I start a job on 1st December that I only could have got by going through uni.
