I was in the workshop just now and I heard a sort of chafing/clacking sound. I stick my head in the corridor and see my girlfriend with an extension lead reel.

This is one of those reels with 3 feet or so which comes out of the hub of the reel to plug into the outlet and then the rest of the cable is wound up on the reel.

So what was she doing?

She had first plugged the end into the outlet. You can see where it's going right?

Yep. She was then hauling on the end of wrapped cable and paying it out. With each tug the plugged in end twisted around. By the time I arrived it looked like a corkscrew with 30 or so turns in it.

Stop! What the hell are you doing, you're going to break it!

What's the problem? It's only a "cord" she replied. rolleyeshehe

Edited because it seemed harsh without the smiley

When she has your first kid, do the same with the placenta and then when she complains say "Oh what's wrong, it's just a cord..."

I came home from work one day to a kitchen quite literally 3ft deep in bubbles.

That'll be washing up liquid in the dishwasher then.

Love her.

Its not so bad unless, even when faced with the facts, they insist that they are not at fault !

ahhh but what you really need is to get two women working together on these things...

wife and mother, decide to strip the wallpaper in the kitchen, as they have two steamers they decide to borrow my 25m extension chord and plug them both into that - after playing out just ONE metre of the extension from its canister!

Fortunately I walked in while it was still merely smoking heavily, it hadn't actually caught fire. rolleyes They seemed oblivious to the thick plumes of acrid smoke emanating from the reel.

my OH had a leak in her flat. there was water all over the carpet and on the ceiling. this took a while to ascertain as she thought the leak was under the floorboards and that water was someone defying gravity by leaking upwards.

she then had the brainwave that it might be the central heating pipes that were leaking as the water only seems to be coming in when the heating was on.

i went round there and took all of 2 minutes to spot the roof was leaking. wasn't hard, there was a stream of water trickling down the rafters from the hole on the roof.

gotta love em, bless.

In my first job last year there was an element of catering, and we had one of those "bung everything in a crate and press 'start'" jobbies.

It was naff, and the bosses refused to get it seen to, even though pots came out dirtier and smellier than when they went in... So I put washing up liquid inside.

Spent the next hour mopping the floor. That was fun.

Still, putting a kettle in the dishwasher? Completely stupid unless it's been pissed in!

Then again, when our kitchen was being re-done and all my cooking had to be done by microwave, I put a tin of beans in the microwave...

After a minute "What's that smell? The beans're still cold..." <Carry on>, after 2 minutes "What the hell is that smell? And what's that noise?" - Walk into the utility to see the microwave smoking and having a rave inside. The beans were stone cold but the tin was roating, and the plastic spinning thing had melted into Anne Widdicombe's face.

Apart from that though, I've not done anything similar. boxedin

My wife (whilst pregnant with zep offspring #1) was stripping wallpaper with steamer happily.

She didn't see the inherent danger of allowing hot water -condensed from steamer, to flow into live socket.

Hefty jolt later we agreed to be a bit more careful with water and electricity.

Having said this, I was the one who manfully tried to wire in a new wall-lamp with live wires, having got a bit out of sync with the whole "power-off: work with wires, power back on: -stop working with wires" process.

That last part isn't completely true.
