Will anyone save us from these greedy tax-guzzlers? And still they don't get it. The Government is ploughing ahead with road charging and increases in vehicle excise duty.

Meanwhile, the British motor industry is in crisis with sales down 23 per cent. Vauxhall's parent company, General Motors, is on the brink of collapse.

Dealerships are going out of business and the head of Jaguar Land Rover has issued a profits warning. The number of car journeys is tumbling.

Yet ministers carry on as if the credit crunch hasn't happened, concentrating on taxing so-called 'gas guzzlers' - precisely the kind of cars built by Jaguar Land Rover - off the road.
They are motivated by greed, self-righteousness and class hatred.

As the driver of a 'gas guzzler', I was interested in just how much gas I was guzzling. Thanks to the magic of onboard computers, I discovered I was getting a frugal 32.3 miles per gallon of diesel.

Then I checked my wife's Mini, which is doing only 29.1 miles to the gallon. Yet I'm the one the polar bear-huggers want to tax into oblivion.
Thousands upon thousands of vital jobs are being sacrificed needlessly on the altar of the false god of 'global warming'.

It's always bloody 'postponed' and never 'cancelled because it's a really stupid idea', more's the pity.

How much space will this get across the rest of the press?

Little or none.

I have this conversation on a regular basis with my tree hugging sister who insists here old banger is more environmentally friendly that a big 4x4 (forget time on road, that arguement goes straight past her and I start quoting that Landrover are the greenest manufacturer).

Her old Seat does 25-30 mpg - if driving like a nun with an egg under the throttle.

How many 4x4's can beat this? Discovery, Touareg, XC90 - let alone the smaller versions.

It was only ever a way of villifying a section of the community so that the majority of useful idiots would be primed into agreeing with a tax increase on a minority. Envy and jealously clothed in a veneer of self-righteousness - the usual method of the left, oh and divide and rule.

My Discovery 3 TDV6 will comfortably beat 30 mpg on long runs down the motorway, and it's only done 5k miles - so it must be capable of better after about 10k IMHO. The unpalletable truth for Socialist Central is that their red-flag waving supporters, in their decrepit old bangers, will undoubtedly be running with significantly less economy whilst also creating more pollution.

30mpg is very doable in my TDV8 Range Rover on a long run, don't have to try too hard to get that.

Only for those who bought their current car before 2006.

That doesn't solve the problem that this is kicking the British car industry when it is already suffering.

Surely it is for cars registered before 2006 regardless of when it was bought. If I bought a 2004 model tomorrow I should be under the old system (if the rumours of a tax delay are true)?

on a motorway run, i can get that out of mine, a n/a 3.9 with 150,000 on the clock and 15 years old.

its creeping in queues that kills my mpg.

i can get 45mpg from the missus fiesta, she is itching to get a fast car back once the daughter has passed her test though.
