Are annual company reports freely available or do you have to buy them?

Trying to do a bit of research on some house builders to see who's doing ok and who's hanging on by their fingernails at the moment.

Happy to pay for info as long as it's accurate and legal (no insider dealing thanks).

Depends how detailed you want them but the standard financial reports for a Ltd company cost peanuts from Companies House (I think £3).

Don't forget that a lot of builders aren't Limited companies though and that financial accounts aren't always any sign of quality... wink

http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/

You can get some info for free. You can pay for the accounts proper; they are public info.

Bear in mind that most companies use any ruse they can to avoid filing accounts for as long as possible. I think the latest online-available accounts of the shysters I work for my company date from '06...

Check court records or join a credit circle run by local insolvency practitioners.

Its not too hard to spot firms in trouble.

If the company is a plc (most big builders are) just call them and they will be only too pleased to send you their annual report and accounts. If they ask why you want them just say you are thinking of buying some shares.

Have a look in Contract Journal, lets the industry know who's doing what.

Also bear in mind that accounts received and published at Companies House can easily only show you the picture of a company two years ago.
