My gf and I are quite lucky in that we seldom have serious arguments about anything.

However, I do tend to suffer with the old red mist when she drives me anywhere, even if she's been kind enough to pick me up from a night out etc!

She's not a bad driver but she reacts differently to traffic situations to me and I just can't keep my mouth shut. As a result, she is a bit touchy around the subject and snaps back at me if I dare say anything.

Do you folks find the same or am I being a funny bugger??

I'm the same with my fiance, I can't stand it when she is driving anywhere with me in the car even though she is a perfectly competent driver.

Normal. My OH's observational skills are non existent. She starts driving and the only thing she isn't thinking about is driving. Blissfully unaware of what is going on around her.

Only when she is trying to join a motorway. Completely unable to judge a gap to fit into. Will not either slow down or accelerate to fit in an existing gap.

Goes her own speed, if that means she gets to the end of the slip road and is side by side with another car on the inside lane she either forces the car to move or does an emergency stop!

Even pointing out the the car on the inside lane could not move over because of a car in the middle will not stop her ranting about it. She belives every body anywhere should move out of the way for her no matter how many times I tell her this is not the case.

Also no matter how many times I say wouldnt it just have been easier to slow down and slip in behind it, or speed up a little she will not listen.

I have absolutely no idea how she has not caused a massive accident doing this. In every other respect she is a fairly decent driver. she just cannot judge gaps/speed or distance.

edited to add any mention of it will cause instant massive outburst, these days I just close my eyes and prey to Allah

Oh and I have finally got her to stop going streight from reverse into first furious took years that one. although when coasting up to traffic lights if she is in second or third gear thats what she starts off in. According to her first second and third are the same thing.

Mrs SC insists that her driving is fine when I'm not with her. Apparently parking (especially) is accomplished without difficulty. But when I'm with her it all goes wrong?

I have same issue, usually me skwirming in the passenger seat as she gets very close to the parked cars we are overtaking!

Mines the opposite, she'd rather hit the oncoming traffic than the parked cars!

My OH very very rarely drives, but is never slow to criticise my driving, and usually the speed of it.

Imagine my amazement when, a couple of months ago, she was at the wheel and I had nodded off ... and woke up to find us doing a fairly easy 110 in the fast lane of the M25! (I think I was probably woken by her expression of victory at having successfully overtaken a car that had been holding her up for the last few miles. Behaviour that would have earned me a serious telling off!)

Im exactly the same, I made her cry once when I said "to be honest I don't feel safe when you drive"

She's not a bad driver by any means but we have very different approaches.

It was part of a much bigger argument, I kept making skidding noises as we went round corners in to high a gear and then make crash noises everytime we stopped behind another car.

Had (past tense) very similar problem. She used to drive in Europe with a minor braking distances especially in Italy. She would out Italian the Italians. If she had a decent braking distance and the car in front started braking she often wouldn't react, in many cases she would accelerate to close the distance before braking. Used to scare the absolute life out of me.

I would get shouted at for judging her driving. Then one afternoon, she was driving, I fell asleep. An hour later just outside Milan I woke up and just screamed in fear she was driving so badly. Man I got so told off for questioning her driving.

We continued a long the autostrada and there were some road works fast approaching. As two of the lanes moved for a contraflow she just hadn't read the road properly, nor the other road users. I couldn't say anything for fear of another argument, so I let it unfold.

She smashed the car through a sign before getting it back into the correct lane.

We pulled off at the next service (couple of miles) and I checked the car over. No permanent damage, and the wing mirror clicked back into place, the whole wing mirror assembly pushed back into place as well, a few scratches, etc.

She was then told off. I explained to her the importance of braking distances and reacting to the actions of other road users in good time. I remember calling the other car we were with with the immortal words "we'll be back up to ramming speed shortly", and there was nothing she could say about it. She just had to take the payback.

Ever since then she has driven properly.

Odd thing is that she always drove perfectly in the US, but in Europe (and especially Italy) she just becomes satan(ette) behind the wheel.

Most women are effing retards when it comes to driving. Every wife in our circle of friends is beyond incompetent, and they are the ones carting the kids around most of the time. My wife's driving sucks most of the time. If she really concentrates, it goes up to a barely mediocre level for a short while before becoming careless again. They just don't care, and if you tell them anything, they think you focus too much on it, or you are too aggressive.

Mine is a nightmare!

Parking at two speeds - fast and supersonic. How she hasn't hit anything majorly I don't know.

Road rage - scares the crap out of me as I'm rather mellow and laid back.

I just sit there quietly.

Mine is OK, to be fair - she hasn't got as powerful car as me and consequently if she does drive mine (rarely) she won't take advantage of opportunites that I would have done.

Doesn't stop her ranting about my driving though.

Apparently using the brakes for actually stopping the car is to be frowned upon, as is looking for opportunities to overtake anyone driving at half the posted speed limit...

And she who frowns, shouts. SWT biggrin
