Tesco - cheeky bastids
Discussion
Tesco - the boss is in the papers today asking the mpc to cut interest rates
a few gripes i have with them - the express stores are a rip off, how can they have the cheek to say theyre "helping us spend less everyday" when they charge so much at these smaller places
petrol - they have been profiteering on it like everybody else for weeks now, if they can offer 5p off a litre when you spend £50 why cant they do it anyway
the dont care about any other business just complete market domination
this is what gets me most - only this week they put out a statement saying they will pay suppliers after 60 days and not 30, how cheeky, this ruins many a small business but they dont care all big companies are the same....how do they get away with it
feel free to add more gripes to this

Its only their customers that give them their position in the market, however convincing them all that Tesco is evil will be quite a task. I think we're stuck with it rightly or wrongly.
Agree 60 days is bad to suppliers but they don't have to do business with Tesco. Having said that, many suppliers would still find it an attractive proposition I would think.

tbh 60 days isnt bad... 90 days used to be commonplace...a few gripes i have with them - the express stores are a rip off, how can they have the cheek to say theyre "helping us spend less everyday" when they charge so much at these smaller places

Saying that retail (esp food) is a very good cashflow model, get stuff, sell it quickly (perishable especially) recieve cash... 60 days later pay supplier... cant be bad !

morrisons all the way, lidl is crap
Actually Morrisons is pretty good. They stock the more interesting cuts of meat (i.e. offal, oxtail, breast of lamb etc) that are both cheap and make some damn tasty dishes. You can tell how the country has allowed itself to become overly fastidious and wasteful about it's eating habits when you shop at Sainsburys - no cheaper cuts out, you have to ask for 'em at the counter.[/quote]

yeh imagine that, they sell stuff many many times over before paying for it making a fat profit while the supplier makes a small percentage which probably goes in interest or fees to the banks
its so one-sided and totally unfair but like the guy mentioned before what can we do, theyre all the same Argos are just as bad

I went into the big Tesco in Guildford yesterday. Never again. I've never seen so many chavs, pikeys and general bottom feeders in one place. staggering.
If you will go looking on the Value shelves what do you expect, buy Finest (same stuff fancier packaging, but no chavs)
Much as I dislike Tesco, your points are essentially flawed.
If they offer 5p / litre off fuel, they don't make a profit on the sale, they make a loss. Supermarket *gross* profit on fuel is pennies per litre - *net* on fuel, it's a loss-leader. The only reason they push the 5p discount is to encourage people to shop for food with them.
On the same lines - they make huge profits, but mostly this comes from non-food items where net margins are in double figures. On *most* food lines, net profits are only a few percent. Overall supermarket net profits on food are usually under 5%, even overall net profits including non-food struggles to reach 7.5%.
They only make the profits they do on sales volume, it's certainly not driven by margin.
However, I fully agree with terms for suppliers - they're very unfair.

They are but at the same time are hardly uncommon amongst firms of a certain size + and not a particularly useful stick to beat Tesco with. Plenty better ones available
I would imagine that most companies are pushing out payments at the moment to the limit or beyond of terms. Sadly this means the little guy loses again through no fault of their own

If you buy mostly the value stuff, then you will not actually be giving them any profit at all, most of the value ranges in the supermarkets are sold at cost or even at a loss (I remember this from seeing figures for stuff when I worked at Asda, when you scanned items in a certain option with a hand held scanner gun thing, you could see what the mark up was.. and on pretty much every SmartPrice item, the mark up was negative)
As to the way they treat suppliers, I have a lot of gripes there, my other half works for a company that supplies Tesco (and the other leading supermarkets), and some of the carp that Tesco come up with regard to how much they do and don't want to pay for stuff is shocking, Tesco actually at one point wanted to pay less than the manufacturing cost price of the products!
