Hi All. Hopefully there is someone who knows more than me about employment law here!

Currently at home and have been since Tuesday afternoon. Absolutely riddled with flu, for the second time now this year, not quite sure whats wrong with me..?!

Anyway I tried to work through it but had to call it quits and go home after losing my rag with one of my students (I'm a teacher) quite uncharacteristically. Still feel rubbish now and should prob stay at home tomorrow too.

The issue is that as far as I am aware my employers will only pay me full pay for 3 sick days a year. Any over 3 and I won't get paid for any of them. As of today I am now on about 5 1/2 for the year. Have spoken to a few people about that and they say it sounds dodgy and possibly illegal. Could this be?
I'm a teacher and I teach adults at a private college. I get paid by the hour so am not salaried. My hours vary slightly but they are consistantly 35+ per week anually. I signed some kind of vauge contract when I joined 18 months ago but don't really have anything written down.

Now, I love my job and I like working where I do but are they taking the biscuit?!

Cheers

They don't have to offer any sick pay, beyond statutory, which isn't much.

Er, read your employment contract?

Just a thought.

And totally legal.

A company is not compelled to offer company sick pay.

Check your contract to see your entitlement, then find another company with a more enlightened approach.

Cheers guys. Contract say "entitled to SSP and 3 days company sick pay per annum"

How much is SSP?

In my line of work, whether you get sick pay depends on your status.

Staff, like me get up to 1/2 a year at full pay and 1/2 a year at half pay.

Shop floor get FECK all, except statutory.

Engineering Contractors get Feck all. Most are self employed too, but are paid double the equivilant Engineers pay.

Virtually nothing. Pennies.

You'll have to suck it up.

Odd, as every teacher's contract I've ever seen gives them carte blanche to do f ck all.

Is it man flu? - if so, I'll keep the answer short as you might not get to the end of it.

SSP is about equivalant to a prescription charge.

It's not that unusual not to have an entitlement to sick pay.

In my last firm payment (except SSP) was at Partners discretion. Where I am now first 3 days are paid after that SSP.

Why should anyone get paid when they don't work?

Balls.

Looks like I'm going to have to teach 9 hours tomorrow feeling like sihte.

I'm sure normal teachers who work in normal schools get great deals but unfortunatley/fortunately I'm not one of them.

Also never used to get the flu but I must have had it 4 times in the last 2 years and I'm only 26. What's wrong with me?!!

I don't get any sick pay. Count yer blessings, because all sick pay does is reduce profit and/or put prices up. That money has to come from somewhere.

Get a flu jab from your GP. Won't help now, but might prevent more...

20 days before SSP kicks in where I am

And one of my guys was off for 3 months with some sort of heart issue 3 years back (he's only been with the firm 6 weeks) and he got the whole lot at full whack, SSP wasn't even mentioned. He also passed his 6 month probation without an extention considering he's missed 1/2 of it

Having said that we work our backsides off so expect the firm to "play" ball

Editied becuase I forgot to complete typing what was actually in my brain
