A new life in British Columbia
Discussion
Have you or anybody you know moved over to the other side of the world?
On the surface it appears to have all the boxes ticked for me. Nice cities, mountains, wilderness and all other goodies!
Both myself and my partner have good jobs so I don't think that would be too much of an issue.
Would be most interested to hear the experience's of other people, both good and bad.

My Aunt moved to Toronto in Canada about 20 years ago and has`nt looked back. She lost her first husband and went to start afresh in Canada where she met her now husband. The lifestyle, people and general attitude of the whole country will never get her back to the UK to live even though she was born and bred here. If I was looking to emigrate then it would be Canada without question.
im moving to vancouver as soon as i can. i cant wait tbh, im so sick of this country.
vancouver has the highest standard of living in the world.
there is an expo in london later this month with loads of prospectie employers from canada going to be there.
it helps ive just married a canadian citizen tho !

i went to vancouver 2 years ago and got to stay in 3 different family members homes. this was great as you really get to see how they live.
the best one was a beautiful home in north vancouver with a panoramic view of the city and harbour.
lots of car enthusiasts there too. stayed with on couple and the guy (ian) had a fully race prepared road legal 944 turbo running lots of h.p.
god i so cant wait!

Could you shed any more light on this please?mark

My plans to get over to vancouver (specifically vancouver island,) seem to failing :-(
I think I need some help/ kick up the arse/ gentle nudge etc.
Have tried the online scoring system, and I "just" pass.
Have been to Canada-Jobserve (plus millions others,) and the people on their seem a little scared talking to me.
Not to mention their obsession of Qualifications over Experience. (Unlike here, where experience speaks louder than text'read kids.)
I've been in Toronto now for just over a year. I've come over on a 2 year secondment with work.
Canada is a great place. The west coast is especially beautiful. I was lucky enough to do a road trip over there earlier this year. I share an office with a guy from Vancouver, so if you have any questions about the place, let me know.

BUY TICKETS?
what the fluff!!
They want me, a 'potential' employee, to BUY a ticket, on the off-chance theirs a job waiting for me?
Whilst I'm at it, I'll send off my £25 cheque to unlock my £42m lottery win in the Spanish lottery.
Ooh, that reminds me - I won £1.2m on a scratch card which was sent through my letter box this morning. I'll give them a ring when I get home.
Now, where did I put my bank account details for George Agdgdgwngo!
I moved to canada over a year ago, There are lots of good positive things about canada, and certainly quality of life is good, but in general canadian salaries are lower, and taxation is a little higher - although this varies dpeending on where you are. BC has some of the most expensive real estate in the country and vancouver is not immune to the problems of a big city (esp ports) there is a considerable gang issue.
You can get PH, you can also get lotuses and caterhams (although the government wont let you build your own caterham!)
The climate in BC is just like the west country - wet and mild,
In terms of getting in to canada, the immigration process is lengthy (3-4 years), but if you can get a job you can get a work permit relatively easily (6 weeks)- esp if your occupation is in demand. But any job offered to a foreigner has to be vetted to make sure that a canadian cant do it or doesnt want it. Also if you are on a work permit you may not obtain provincial health coverage (ie free)
If you have a professional qualification from the UK, you should check that it is accepted where you want to go.
Have a look at : http://www.britishexpat.com/expatforum/canada/inde...
You would be surprised how much it costs to establish yourself in a new country, esp if you have kids,
PM me if you wish!
