In the grand tradition of the Sky 'skimming' pricing strategy, I'm wondering when they'll eventually dump the additional charges for HD channels.

I would have hoped to see some movement before Christmas really smile

I don't mind the cost of the box, but Subs for a handful of channels seems a bit OTT.

...and what effect will FreeSat have on their pricing strategy???

They almost certaintly wont for at least another 12 months quite probably longer.

The tooling costs in cameras and broadcast DVRs was massive and uptake hasnt been huge thus far.

There is also no free alternative to the key HD content such as sports.

The problem is that Sky have to recoup a lot of HD investment including cameras, encoders, satellite transponder hire etc. Can't see it happening soon and Freesat etc are not really in competition.

As they have just had a push on sky+HD(Install waiting times of 3 to 4 weeks around here so must be popular) I would have thought nearer 18 months before prices are even near to being cut

In SKYs defence, an initial outlay of a tenner for 6 channels at launch was frankly, a pisstake.

Now its up to about 30 channels, for the same ten pounds, so at least the price hasn't gone up accordingly.
