Have a look at this for a moment. I placed the first bid of £50, and within minutes someone entered £51. And now there is another bidder at £52.
Does that strike you as odd. Don't know why, but it feels like I'm bidding against the owner.
Why he's so worried I don't know, because the lens will go for £180 min.

That's because on of the other 2 bidders has set a higher maximum bid, it'll keep counter bidding you until you reach his maximum.
I just found it odd to be outbid for so little so quickly.ie, if his maximum is say, 60. If no-one else bids it will stay at the minimum required to win the auction. If you bid 52 it will autobid up to 54, say. Then you bid 56 and it will automatically go up to 58. Up to his maximum bid.

Ebay autobids up to your maximum amount!!

its ok, i understand the concept of ebay. thank you :thumbsup:ie, if his maximum is say, 60. If no-one else bids it will stay at the minimum required to win the auction. If you bid 52 it will autobid up to 54, say. Then you bid 56 and it will automatically go up to 58. Up to his maximum bid.
my interest was in the nickel and diming of the second bidder, and probably third bidder for that matter, and the timing of the first bidder themselves. (not how ebay works).
EDIT: Oops, misread the bids! I'll leave what I wrote in though but it's not right!
The time between the bids is a bit odd, seeing as there are 4 days left, and especially since it seems bidder 2 came back and bid manually rather than bidding more initially and having his bid updated automatically up to his max (although ebay could just be being a bit slow, unlikely though)
Also bid 3 is a bit specific. So yes, possibly something odd going on to boost the bidding.

there you go, just bid £60 and bidder 2 comes alive again from 10:17am??
Ignoring what I wrote earlier, bidder 2 had his first automated bid at 5th Nov 10:17 and this will carry through until he reaches his max. Bidder 2's latest bid is an auto-bid. To view the other auto-bids click "show automatic bids"Its amazing how many people dont understand the ebay bidding system.
Most people use it like an auction reacting to small incremental bids rather than just entering their highest price.
Bearing this in mind you are better swooping in at the last minute with a killer bid of your highest price, thereby outbidding people
sat waiting to respond, but out of time.

why the heck are you starting to bid 4 days before auction ends?
madness imo!!
Not at all. When I was trading collectibles a couple of years ago, there were a few occassions when no one would bid for the first 3 or 4 days and the seller would cancel the auction. madness imo!!
If you want the item, there's no harm in putting in a low bid just to make sure the auction proceeds.

I don't buy a huge amount of stuff on eBay, but I've tried various "strategies" and I've found time and time again that if I place the first bid then someone else will bid almost straight away.Even on things which have a lots for sale, you'd think that if you put a bid in then others would leave you to it, but they don't - they ignore the unbid auctions and bid yours up!!
I pretty well always snipe at the end of the auction now, but if I haven't bought anything for a while, and am out of practice with the timing, then I do sometimes miss it. Doh!
