What's the consensus on hat wearing?

When it's cold I have a couple of knitted beanies I like to don, which I believe to be perfectly acceptable.

However, of late my Missus has been suggesting I get one of those little trilby things to wear when we go to bars, cocktail soirees that kind of thing, I'm not convinced and reckon I'll look like some kind of foppish tit.

Opinions welcome. thumbup

Acceptable headwear:
Bowler
England Cricket hat
Aussie cork hat
Beenie
Indiana Jones hat
Panama

Unacceptable headwear:
Stetson (unless Texan)
one of those trilby things (trying to look like Pete Doherty is not cool)
Guinness hat - yes, we get it, you're pissed and probably not Irish.
Baseball cap (unless American)

I just bought myslef a trilby from topman for £15. Obviously i don't wear it all the time, just whenever i'm dressing up to go out.

So, your considering buying/wearing something because your Missus has suggested it.

Did your mother used to dress until you were wed? yes

You either suit a trilby or you don't. If in doubt, you don't.

I used to have an original Aussie hat (with corks) and a bowler, which cost an unlikely sum of money. I lost both in pubs.

Crickey. That's quite an extreme reaction!

To the contrary, it seems to be de-riguer in certain establishments that I occasionally have the misfortune to frequent at the behest of The Wife.

Have you considered other establishments?

I think trilbys look fine as long as the rest of your outfit matches the style.

I've had plenty of compliments, and its even a bit of an ice breaker with females. I've found they like someone who has the confidence to be a little different and stand out from the crowd.

If you do, prepare to be laughed at continuously.

Pete Doherty is a . He wears a trilby. Ergo, any wearer of a trilby is a by association.

Nay, nay.

She hasn't suggested as such, just dropped subtle hints like - 'oh you'd look cool (ie: stupid) in one of those trilby things' - you know what ladies are like.

My gut reaction is, as I stated above, that I think I'd look like a tool, just needed some confirmation of such from PH, should she become more persistant in her craving for unsuitable heargear.

A top hat or a bowler hat should be the only hat a gentleman wears. Everything else is strictly for the colonies.

oh yeah ETA - your Mrs has seen someone she'd like a portion of in a trilby, and is getting you to change before she dives headlong into a sweaty, dirty, sex-fest with him. HTH wink

If she wants a trilby, let her wear it then?

Okay, so narrow minded people don't like and probably don't suit them. They're probably also a bit affraid to be different.

nono You carry on with your metro-sexual ways. As soon as you leave the bar, be under no illusion, the girls will be laughing at you, whilst simultaneously looking for the biggest hetero, alpha male in the place to screw them senseless in the nearest alleyway.

fking trilby's. What is the world coming to banghead
